Manga fan here that just found your reactions, and I'm so glad you guys enjoyed this series! You guys are correct, stampede is both a reimagining as well as a prequel series. They shifted the timeline around a lot (like Vash meeting Meryl and Wolfwood before July) but I'm super excited where Studio Orange takes things next!
The studio emulating a long tracking shot in animation was insane.
I kinda hope Meryl doesn't get transferred to the insurance division in season 2. Her personal connection to Vash would give her the motive of clearing Vash's name and being a reporter would make that goal all the more possible. Her personal journey of trying to bring truth to a population that won't accept it could parallel Vash's journey of trying to find the peaceful solution in a world that just doesn't allow it.
It seems next season will follow the "gung-ho guns" arc: Wolfwood tracks Vash down, they regroup with Meryl and Milly, then have to fight Legato and his colourful minions. Legato is temp big baddie while Knives recovers from the July incident.
I also have a theory that Milly could be Roberto's kid, and wants to work specifically with Meryl to learn how he died. I like Milly just fine, but she's not always that relevant to the story. This gives her a reason to join Team Stampede, and keep a present absence for Roberto.
When Knives said "Nai is dead. You killed him." He means Vash killed him when he chose the humans over his own brother and left Nai to wage a war alone for 150 years.
Happy to see you two enjoyed this show. If you're looking for something else to watch, I'd like to recommend Mobile Suit Gundam The Witch from Mercury. If you have no prior experience with Gundam, I feel like this is a good jumping on point, it's story is completely unrelated to everything that came before (it takes place in an alternate timeline) and a lot of its themes regarding war are still present.
I don't know what's going to happen, but I'm very excited for more.
