As a guy who saw the 2008 version first, the remake is amazing. The music and voices are pretty much the same, but the visuals are far better than the original.
The story is also the same aside from putting Yarei back and making Chloe a background character.
I think the only people who claim the remake is worse are people blinded by nostalgia or people who haven't watched the remake
I wanted to comment on your comparison with Frieren, because it's more apt than you may realize. The remake hasn't gotten far enough into the story to really feel the full effect, but a major theme in both series is how extremely long-lived beings persist in a word that is constantly changing, and how it can feel like they are being left behind. As Holo and Lawrence's relationship progresses, this becomes, as you would expect, a significant issue for them.

Its a great show for sure its technicly an anime based on a light novel but its very much so a proper novel doing its own thing. The remake is all around very well made and closer to the original material, one can see that a lot of people from the first adaptation are working on the current one, its basicly the same but the production value is better.
Sure i have nostalgia for the old one especially for the old soundtrack but the new one is great as well and used better in the show while maybe not as good in a stand alone fashion. I really do enjoy the new show going with the more rounded character designs which would have been so hard to work with in the handdrawn style.
The lenght of the season as well as the love put into it did have good success and at this point i am pretty confidend we will be getting a 2nd season down the line
