Watched the first 2 seasons all the way back when they aired in 2016 and just finished rewatching both of them in like 3 days plus the OVA. I'll get to the movie and season 3 next, so I should be caught up by around the time episode 2 of season 4 airs. I was curious if my impressions of the first 2 seasons from back then would hold up (season 1 being decent but not amazing as it's a lot of set up, and season 2 being a huge step up especially with the 4-episode flashback that begins the season), and they pretty much did. The one thing I'd forgotten though is how basically nobody in this damn series dies from their fights, lol. I'll see if that changes in season 3 when I watch it in the next day or two.
some things i'd like to add or clarify because it wasn't included in the adaptation:
– ranpo wasn't an aspiring police officer. he hated hierarchy, and the only reason he went to the police academy is because that's what his father told him to do before he died.
– ranpo's parents are incredibly smart, which led him to believe all adults are as smart as his parents. he was utterly confused and frustrated upon arriving in yokohama because he thought everyone keeps on lying to him but the reality is people genuinely do not see what ranpo sees.
– fukuzawa and ranpo walked from the zenzai shop to the theatre. during that walk, fukuzawa's patience was tested to say the least. he was throwing ranpo far away, tying him up on the street and leaving him, dropping him in a manhole, but only in his mind. he did it to cope with ranpo's shenanigans.
– upon arrival at the theatre, miss egawa (the house manager) was read by ranpo, which led her to be angry because it was all uncalled for.
– they didn't include most of fukuzawa's internal monologues, which is sad, because that's how he made decisions throughout the story.
I'm pretty sure that actor who said he should become a taxi driver…did become a taxi driver – the one who Kunekida ended up catching because he was drugging passengers who ended up missing (the Azure Messenger story).
I think Fukuzawa was a secret assassin for the gov't then quit and has been doing this bodyguard stuff. But they want him to join the MP to keep him handy and probably to keep an eye on him – letting a known assassin run around loose is dangerous, eve one as honorable as Fukuzawa.
Man, this season started off amazing, just like 2 & 3. I love these flashback arcs and I think everyone's been dying to know more about Fukuzawa. Aww, teen Odasaku was fierce! It's such a shame that Fukuzawa didn't manage to recruit him – he'd have been perfect for the Agency.
The whole color-faded filter, It just might be a stylistic choice to indicate that this is a flashback and not necessarily mean anything. But I think that's to show that we're viewing the world through Fukuzawa's perspective, that's how he sees the world, all faded colors and grayscale. Then again, it might mean nothing and just an aesthetic choice.
okay so what fukuzawa did to ranpo when he shouted at him was a MILITARY TECHNIQUE used to stun ADULTS. i hope they explained this bc honestly without the explanation it just looks like another exaggerated scene

I read the book version of this ages ago so suddenly seeing it animated was soooo cool. Haven't been watching trailers or reading about where this season will go, so it totally came out of nowhere. So excited
