This is a great episode tbh I like the new direction of this season,
It’s like Thorfinn is like a completely different person, been through a lot! He actually remembered the village that was raided when Enair was telling him the story

You gotta appreciate the character development and themes of this arc, this doesn't have the action like season 1. If you saying that this is boring then this ain't for you 🤷‍♂ …and TRUST, there will be iconic moments iykyk

XD viking farms are huge lands, and they are converting a forest with axe and rope, that will take like 5yrs at least, trivial: the viking lore it was custom to reward the work with weight of its worth. if there was many that would follow that is debate to this days, since those lore and texts are written by monks 200-500 years later, after most viking was already converted.

Btw in the author's notes of the manga having a slave during these times was the equivalent of owning a new car
Meaning Ketil is loaded enough to have multiple Ferraris 💰

Translation Notes
KARL ,Karl
The Viking social class of free men, greater than thralls (slaves) but lower than noble jarls: in short, the common man. The Old English form of the word was "churl," which eventually evolved into its modern pejorative meaning: one who is so common as to be low class or boorish.

you should know, if you're not familiar, that people of the Nordic region have very different hair colours. Generally the more North you go the lighter their hair colour is, overall and the more south you go the more yellow their blonde is. Many Finns& Swedes for example, have naturally “Bleach” blonde hair

For those who are interested in reading along with the manga this episode adapted all of chapter 56 and the majority of chapter 57 (specifically 25/38 pages).

Something to keep in mind, the North Atlantic slave trade of Northern Europe during the 11th century wasn’t quite as dehumanizing as the later Trans-Atlantic chattel slave trade of the Americas. Slaves like Thorfinn and Einar (known as “thralls”, while non-nobility free-men were called “karls”) tended to have slightly more societal rights and upward-mobility opportunities, so for anyone wondering the Ketil dude wasn’t bullshitting Thorfinn and Einar about them being able to feasibly purchase their freedom back within 3 years.

As for how long Thorfinn has been a slave, while the exact amount of time he’s already been on Ketil’s farm is unspecified in the manga, the manga does specify that Thorfinn and Einar meet during late June of 1015 (and King Sweyn and Askeladd died in February of 1014), so Thorfinn can at most have been on Ketil’s farm for a little more than a year.

IIRC I believe even if the tenant farmer’s daughter had a bastard child with Olmar, it would still likely grant the tenant farmer family some upward mobility/social-connections and security, as acknowledged bastards still had some social standing (think of how bastards worked in Game of Thrones).

Since this episode didn’t adapt all of chapter 57, the roles of the two drunks weren’t defined yet, but it’s not really a spoiler to know what their jobs on the farm are. Those two drunk guys were “Guests”, basically mercenary soldiers hired as security-guards for the farm (so they aren’t part of the farm-hands like the karls who ate part of Einar and Thorfinn’s lunch).

To give context for farming back then, the average productivity ratio for wheat back then was only about 1 to 2-3, meaning for every 1 bag of wheat used to plant a crop, the average harvest would produce about 2-3 bags of wheat (giving a net productivity of about 1-2). So every bit of the harvest counted back then.

Olmar legit reminds me of a Vinland version of Fucking Ba-Hah from Black Clover.

Spoiler Alert

All jokes aside, Olmar had one of the most unexpected character arcs in Farmland, boi really grew into a man.

wagnar 2023.01.17 - 4:22 pm

Olmar is the MVP of this season.

Rorschach 2023.01.17 - 5:43 pm

Jack Lobrano 2023.01.17 - 6:37 pm

I am 100% either Terrence. I have also slept in a club. Like a drill Sgt once told me: "A properly-trained soldier can sleep ANYTIME, ANYWHERE!"

Also, side note: I have NEVER seen any fantasy property address how difficult it'd be to draw a sword from an unmodified sheath on your back.
