Belle Lablac doesn’t really fit in as the only human being in a world full of anthropomorphic animals. No fangs, no fur, no scales, no claws. Lonely and eager to discover where she comes from, Belle journeys to find answers to the questions of her heart. Carrying nothing but her giant sword, the Runding, she faces a world of possibilities and pitfalls in hopes of discovering the truth.

I thought this was a good episode… I think it works as a midseason finale as it sets things up for cour 2 of the anime–I agree with the anime taking a season off for the 2nd cour/season to continue with good quality animation and direction, but I had heard originally the show was planned to be 20 episodes/2 cours straight so I guess plans changed. I liked that Adonis gained some understanding and control with Dram and now has a sword of his own that will not disintegrate right away from his touch–I think it was good progression for his character even though he has essentially become an antagonist to Belle at this point like you said. Also, I liked that Belle did not decide to mope about after what happened and is now going to participate in more battles while she thinks of what should come next for her.
I agree this really is a mystery show… a lot of the world building opens up as you go along and are slowly feed both answers and more questions, so I'm looking forward to the sequel to see what happens. If you haven't already read them I recommend checking out Alice in Wonderland and/or Through the Looking Glass cause I see a number of parallels here to those classic stories, mostly to Alice in Wonderland in terms of the strangeness of the world building, but also in terms of having a fish-out-of-water character and cat/bunny characters, etc.
