Have you seen this old anime called record of lodoss war? I'm gonna be starting it. It was recently added to crunchyroll. I think it's from the 90s. But from what I hear, the anime is actually based off a D&D campaign the writers played.

Angelsambition 2023.01.06 - 11:55 am

I’m still trying to figure out the time period for this, it feels like it’s still the edo period, maybe towards the end. Especially with the importation of opium from the English and guns from the English and Dutch, also Christian samurai so I guess the mid 1800s.

What a way to get me attached to a main character bro. All he was trying to do was follow his moral code and got tricked into killing a loved one and setting in motion the suicide of his own fiancé. This man did not deserve that. I hope he finds happiness. At least in the ed he has a peaceful look on his face.

8:00. Actually, at this point in time, guns had been in Japan for a few hundred years. If you want a detailed explanation, read on. Admittedly, there’s a wall of text. If you want the distilled version, just read the next paragraph and skip to the third to last paragraph. The rest of it is historical context.

There are a few contextual clues in the episode that allow you to determine the timeframe of this story. The major one is the reference by the corrupt minister, Matsumine, at 13:05, to the British Empire’s burgeoning opium trade with the Qing Dynasty of China, which places the era solidly in the 19th century. For those aware of the relevant historical events, this is a major detail.

During much of the 18th century, the balance of trade between China and the West was firmly in China’s favor, with teas, silks, and other luxury goods flowing out of the country and filling the Qing’s coffers to overflowing with foreign silver. In return, China imported little from the West. This dynamic reversed dramatically, in the span of several decades, when the British began producing opium cheaply in India (which it had colonized) and selling it to China. As more Chinese became addicted to the drug and the country began losing money, the Qing government became increasingly hostile to the British, culminating in the Opium Wars between 1839 to 1842.

The British Empire fighting wars to preserve an opium monopoly in China effectively makes it the biggest drug cartel in history.

The antagonist in this episode implies that the opium trade would spread to Japan, allowing the British to subjugate the country much like it had subjugated China. But he believed he would profit from this development and that the British would allow him to govern Japan for them.

But back to the comment about “when the guns started pulling up”. By this time in history, firearms had already been known in Japan for 500+ years, although they were not used regularly until around the late 1500’s. The Japanese were first introduced to gunpowder weapons in the 1300’s, by the Chinese (although they were more of a novelty than serious weapon back then) and, by the 1600’s, were producing Tanegashima matchlock guns, based on Portuguese designs. Use of these guns by samurai became commonplace by the Sengoku (Warring States) period (1500’s to 1600’s). Oda Nobunaga especially favoured them. The idea that swords were the primary weapons of the samurai is a common misconception, perpetuated by Hollywood and even anime. But Akira Kurosawa’s samurai movies did properly depict the importance of guns. The sword was a symbolic and ceremonial weapon rather than a practical one. It was used much less frequently in actual battle than firearms, bows, and pole arms (e.g. yari, naginata). The following video talks a bit more about the history of samurai gunnery.

Another interesting historical detail: one of the protagonists displays a tattoo of the Virgin Mary. It would be interesting to know if he was a recent convert or the descendant of one. Portuguese missionaries, in the 1500’s, were instrumental in bringing Christianity to Japan, and were persecuted for it. Probably it’s not an important plot point, as mystical organisations with Catholic trappings are long standing anime tropes.

History can be a fascinating melange of interwoven stories between nations. This show obviously has anachronistic and fantastical elements (like a lot of anime) but it does reference an actual historical period.

Very few people notice but that "suicide" looks weird, especially when in that room you can see the strings that the girl used to kill one of the enemies and also the little object that the father in law was grabbing before the protagonist killed him and that after his death took it.

This is giving me so much Sarai-ya Goyou (House of Five Leaves) vibes, especially the two male leads, and I'm here for it!

Kamijoutouma5 2023.01.09 - 3:50 am

A story about Edo Period + Gen Urobuchi writing it is a match made in heaven every single time.

Did not expect to hear Katanagatari in this video. Dang, I gotta go back and finish that anime now that you mention it. I loved the style in that show.
