They’re all androids, resistance and yorha, they’re not super clear but they do say that all humans fled to the moon and they say on the radio in this episode “to all androids fighting on the ground»

Another thing. this is a proxy war, the machines fight for the aliens and the androids fight for the humans.
After the god told them about the meaning of life some of the machines started having feelings. The treasures are what the machines value, for example a brother or flowers.
Fun fact. The ed is from Amazarashi who do the second OP of 86. A1 pictures and Amazarashi again, Instant banger.

I knew right away that 2B’s voice was the same as Violet Evergarden (if you’ve ever seen that… if not, you definitely should). I didn’t know she was also Mikasa (from Shingeki no Kyoujin) but after you mentioned it, I could hear it. ^_^
The timeline in anime can be very confusing for people new to the Nier universe. The alien invasion is around A.D. 5000 but the first episode with 2B/9S actually happened around A.D. 11944, so thousands of years passed, human-android side launched 14 planet-scale wars against alien-machine but none succeed to reclaim the earth. Lily and the gang are older human-like androids deployed to earth during the 8th massive war and then abandoned by those so-called humans on the moon, that's why she is so skeptical and worried since machine starts to evolve. The YoRHa model is developed around A.D. 11939 in the 14th android-machine wars. Lily first met an important YoRHa model "number 2" in A.D. 11941, that's why she mistake 2B for the older one she met. This background is not even in the game, they are published as audio drama or graphics novels even before the Nier Automata game was published. Everything in this episode 2 seems so disconnected but think about your attitude toward those tin-man robots. In Episode 1 you have no guilt but feel super cool watching 2B dice and slice them right? But after the second episode, do you still feel the same?

Humans resist and survive because we are space roaches, coming up with super androids to fight our wars for us because no one can say no to Skynet in a skirt. Why wouldn't they be made as hot waifus and femboy husbandos? (No one wants a Terminator in a kilt).
14 full counter-invasion wars later and here we are. Multiple factions of machines making machines to fight machines for mysterious masters and forgotten goals. Many different circles of AI's are dancing with the fires of self awareness and true intelligence and emotions on both sides.
