King Sweyn from Vinland seems to be based off the real life King of Denmark, Sweyn Forkbeard. I guess his appearance was largely inspired by the irl figure and his distinct split black beard might just be a neat play on with the real dude having the last name Forkbeard lol. I think like you already said most of his features otherwise are just from his age and the time period they were from, where looks didn't really matter to who was King. Although, I do believe that the author kind of accentuated his gross and frail physical appearance to emphasise this King was mostly brains not strength; if I recall correctly in season 1 they mentioned he was very wise and tricky.

I would assume they don't like canute because he is danish and the old king who left them was the original english king and since he came back they thought they could beat the danish army now with king sweyn dead but idk could be wrong just my guess
I mean, for me it's kinda like taking a murderer and explaining to them that killing is bad… You either scare him with consequences and he stops, or he risks and do it anyway. Even today with have soldiers that rape and steal from victims of war, either because they think none will know or they have equally corrupt commander and let's them do it. I only know that it does happen, not if it's rare (I like to think so that majority have morals even tho they have such inhumane duty to do). Back in medieval it was common, and vikings (which Canute commands) were knows to almost Always do it. I'd say he did a right call, but I just don't really believe that humans can drastically change, at least in large quantities, even today. It take at least one generation to see real change.

Because King Canute is an ethnic Dane, and King Ethelred is an ethnic Anglo-Saxon. Quite simple, really. The only thing stronger than ethnicity is one's Religion.
Floki is basically a high level Bureaucrat(warrior-bureaucrat). A new King can't just fire types like Floki(because of pushback he would receive from other noblemen) similar to how a new U.S. President can't just fire bureaucrats after being elected. Plus Floki assisted Canute's father conquering England.

The soldier pillaging is like you know ingrained into their brains. It’s very difficult to just explain them and that’s why the only thing to do is to implement it by force. Ofcourse they will get angry but I guess that’s the cost for correcting their mentality. The idea of letting them fear god is actually what happens in our society but that has problems in itself.
Floki has a lot of power and respect in England. He was the right hand of sweyn and one of the main reasons England was conquered by sweyn.
You can’t just fire him and hope no one would mind, firing him means rebellion from majority of the nobles plus even sone people
Why people were more loyal to the king that go to exile? Simple, because He's english, Canute is Danish
