Nier: Automata is one of my favorite games of all time, and the writing and the music in the game are amazing.
Ep 1 of Ver 1.1a has been exceptionally faithful so far, even down to incorporating "joke endings" into the episode. Whether the show stays faithful to the game, or branches out into unknown territory, I have a feeling we're in for a wild ride.
I'm curious how this story will be conveyed in anime form. Even when watching the episode, it's difficult for me to understand that because I am remembering everything I know from the game, including things to come, but also details they skip, or did differently. So hearing the impressions from someone who hasn't played the game would be the only way.
There is one particular story bit that just doesn't work in any medium other than a videogame, but I wonder if they'll re-write it to make it work in anime form.

I became a fan in 2017 of course and glad the original got a remake. I heard the story will be a little different compared to the original game of course. so looking forward to the rest….since the Nier game series is finished from what I heard.
Not gonna lie, kinda worried about the pacing: you really can't just adopt things one to one when you switch the format from video game to a TV show, and that feels like what they are doing for the most part.
though the post-credit skit does give me at least some faith that there are indeed thoughts put into this.
Hopefully the anime manages to keep a good pace. As for this episode, its really pretty and although many still shots were bad, many other stills were pretty well executed.
Personally, the most hilarious still is a 0.5 second still shot of 2B in her mecha yelling like halfway the episode. You can realize the voice actress did a full scream, but the editors had to make do with only the start of it. Hilarious.

the yorha units are androids, so they have multiple bodies that match their model, and they 'survived' the explosion at the end by uploading their 'memories' (data) to their base in space (the bunker) thats how they 'revive' 😀 but also if they didn't manage to 'save' their data in time, their 'reborn' selves only have their memories until the part where they last 'saved'. Thats why 2B remembers everything, but 9S no longer has memories of meeting 2B in the factory
This is one of my three favorite games of all time, and it's absolutely scary how 1-on-1 this episode is. I could even tell you the individual containers 2b is standing on.
Because of this the 3d also bothers me less, simply because I think they're genuinely the models of the game itself, from the mechs to the corridors, that simple knowledge makes it almost quaint to me, despite me absolutely HATING cgi in anime.
Right now I am still at the same place emotionally as I was before the episode, on the one hand I feel like this insanely accurate approach is interesting and exciting, but on the other hand I feel like being a shot for shot remake isn't the best way to tell this story.
But then they do things like add in the 26 endings by having a live action puppet of 2b and 9s perform the 26 endings and I think "YES, brilliant, perfect way to keep that idea intact". Ps, of the 26 endings (one for each letter of the alphabet) there are only 5 serious ones, the rest are joke endings, to do those as after credits skits, is genious.
Episode 1 brought us through the prologue, which is pretty railroady, what really interests me is the next episode, where you'd have more freedom, I think that will really show us what kind of anime this will be.
If done right this could be the most philosophically full anime I've ever seen.
