That wasn't easy to watch…Vinland Saga S2 just keeps getting better! See my full live reaction to today's episode by joining the Patreon! https://www.patreon.com/BrandonReviews
We don't live for eating, but we eat to live. ☝️
The punishment was cruel and unneeded, karma will have it revenge on those who strike down on the defenseless and hurt. Also… Thorfinn is more or less, starting to look like a nicer version of Askaladd if you think about it
I guess the last scene answers einar's question whether arnheid can also eventually be free …
I feel bad for Ketil. He seems to be a really nice guys.
Sadly he is born in the wrong era.
His entourage kinda make sens in some way.
Being to soft during those time would probably lead you to your downfall.
Scary son 😨
This episode man this episode
And it's only gonna get better
I now remember why I finished this arc in one day while I was reading the manga lol
I see two stories being told here.
Story #1 – A tale of folklore, lies, hypocrisy, and false judgement.
Story #2 – A tale of wonders, hope, expectations, and change.
Here you have Einar and Thorfin continuing their lives trying to raise crops, and growing their field, in order to not only survive, but also buy their freedom.
On the other hand you have 2 kids living with a sick mother and baby, trying to survive after their father left to sell their crops, and never returned afterwards.
On the one side, they continue their hard work. so that they can more forward, until they reached that crossroad where they'll need to decide where to go next,
depending upon how their fortunes continue to grow favorable within them. While on the other hand, the young boy, committed a crime,
out of necessity, in this case, starvation. Especially when you have three other members of your family starving, and with no means to try and obtain some wealth,
in order to survive.
Fortunately for Einar and Throfin, they continue their good fortune by continuing to work hard, and eventually earn enough, so that they can move on with their life
after being slaves. However, unfortunately, the boy took the harsh punishment, in order to protect his sister from harm, and earn on his own by being
put to work in the fields, so that his family can eat.
Unfortunately there is yet another side to the story, which is the two sides of the land owner himself.
Thus bringing up a couple of old saying, for example, "Never judge a book by its covers", "Looks can be deceiving", "Absolut power corrupts absolutely"
When it comes to people during that time period, it always depends upon your status, wealth, and beauty.
Some follow it while others can care less about it. Unfortunately, when it comes down to humanity, some people like it, while other don't
It was really a tough watch.
Especially when the punishment was served.
Then at the end, it served the view as a reminder that it was brutally harsh back then.
Really enjoyed it.
Looking forward to next week.
Until then,
Enjoy!!
It’s just keeps on getting better wow wow wow
The thing is Ketil is worse than Snake and his son in my opinion. Thorgil and Snake think punishing the children is the right thing to do at the very least, to deter thievery etc. Ketil KNOWS that beating children is wrong, but he still does it anyway. He even adjusts up the number of strokes from five to ten to keep his reputation. Sure, he might have been forced to do at least something, but at that point, where Snake asked him how many strokes, he could have given any number. Whats the point of knowing the right thing to do if you arent going to act upon it? Thoughts and prayers? Only action can change the outcome.
I knew that girl was giving up the cheeks
These epsiodes be getting more brutal in terms of getting real and emotionally raw real quick. Like damn. I'm speechless. I have no words.
Unfortunately even now there are places in the world that are just as brutal as the viking era. Even now there are alot of fucked up things that happen to marginalized community's and minorities because the system hurts those who are less fortunate. Discrimination, hate crime , bigotry, murder, and the most heinous acts committed against you're fellow human are still issues now. Which is why I argue Vinland Saga is even more relevant with it's messages and themes now . Especially in 2023.
Einar got ntrd before it even started 👀
oh no einar and that slave girl ( i cant pronounce her name) .im routing for em but its gonna be hard since she's ketil's personal slave. and ketil is a coward. 😑
I love the story, the characters, the music and the drawing, but they can stop animating for all I care. It doesn't add anything but cringe the way the animation is done now.
The punishment was very suspenseful in what they would do to them. They had no qualms about hurting the young girl. Snake and Thorgil were brutal although Ketil kept up the lie of being brutal. It’s ironic how Ketil confides and seeks solace in Arnheld despite Arnheld not caring at all about him compared to how she feels about Einar. Her expression was expressionless and she didn’t care at all really. She was just saying things and listening as his slave despite how he might love her. Strength over empathy in that society. The manga showing her nude is raw and vulnerable although I guess they can’t show that necessarily for the anime or they decided it was unneeded. Cutting off hands is a common punishment for the crime. And the show can make various scenes more human and real since some scenes in other anime look cool or interesting or evoke some other emotion. Threats and torture in other anime can evoke slightly different feelings. Or how some things are done by the protagonist themselves. It feels impossible to pay off the slave debt that they probably need to escape. Although we know some people have escaped slavery. Also can’t help but feel like Thorfinn’s voice doesn’t fit his more mature current look sometimes.
Crunchyroll had this one funny caption for when Thorfinn and Einar were looking at wheat basically captioned Thorfinn touches grass lol
as much as Ketil pretends he has no choice that the way his sons act are a result of their enslavement to their wealth the only way to keep wealth in the long term in this society is by being violent and being friends with people who are violent. He still enslaves and exploits hundreds of people. He isn't forced to do anything, the punishment for his actions are to become a commoner like his father
I wonder how homeboy is gonna react when he finds out his love interest is the master's personal slave (although it doesn't seem like she's interested in the master). No wonder the wife seems to like abusing her. Thorgil mentioned hearing from veterans about 'Iron Fist Ketil', so I wonder how that worked if it was all a lie…maybe he did participate in war, but hated the violence?
I'm interested in seeing how Thorgil will react to Thorfinn, and if he'll try to test him.
I was kind of expecting it to be similar to thorfinn's dad where Kentil first saw his own child for the first time and didn't want to be that violent anymore. Guess i was wayyyy off
This episode is great for showing how the new characters interact with one another and handles these dilemmas. Ketil is the one in charge but he still feels pressured by those around him and by Norse society. Snake is very much a lawful neutral character, they have stolen so there must be a punishment. Thorgil offers up a harsh and brutal punishment even though they're kids. And lastly Pater offers the best option, but even then violence is still necessary. I also really like how even though she doesn't say much this episode (because she's a slave) Arnheid is also very present throughout if you pay attention to the background of shots.
Can't wait to see Olmar vs a 🐖🤣🤣
