HE REALLY DID THAT | Vinland Saga Season 2 Episode 8 Reaction

by MOEPP

OMG I LOVED THIS EPISODE SO MUCH!! Definitely one of my favourite episodes of the season so far! We’re finally going there and getting into the deep stuff concerning Thorfinn, getting to the root of all his trauma! Having Thofrinn open up to Einar about Askeladd!!! He really still has a lot going on there. And then about being empty, if he can change and not deserving to get angry because he’s done worse. Just wow. The end though!! Thofrinn did that!! And this is a good thing but also a bad thing I feel. Hope you enjoy!

Hello hope you enjoyed the video. Again, this episode was incredible and definitely one of my favourites! Watching that final scene back again I think I get it. Both the woman and Thors were people trying to deter Thofrinn from violence so in punching that guy he was reminded of them and their message. He asks what Thors is saying and I think he's telling him what he always has – that violence is not the way to go and that a real warrior doesn't need a sword. Or well that's my interpretation. We'll probably get more into it next episode. Can't wait!

It was a beautiful impression, and the most beautiful thing about this is your presence. Keep going, my sister. I love you from Iraq

This is the first episode where I felt the crunchyroll subs were definitely better than the Netflix ones. I totally missed Einar and Arnheid's convo in the netflix subs! That said, I do think the Netflix subs are less accurate but more powerful, if that makes any sense? Some paraphrasing but sometimes it makes it better expressed.

This was such a fantastic episode in every aspect.

While this was an incredibly cathartic and sad episode, it is interesting to think this is probably the 1st selfless punch Thorfinn has (likely) ever thrown.

Unless I'm forgetting something from S1, Thorfinn has always acted selfishly since Thors' death. Anything he did was in service for his revenge, even seemingly selfless acts, like challenging Thorkell to a duel off his own free will after Askeladd's band mutinied, was done under that self-serving mission.

THIS is different.

Thorfinn didn't feel rage for the crops, like he said, he doesn't feel he has the RIGHT to be angry over the abuse he's suffered.

But he IS angry for his friend, Einar. He felt Einar's rage, and lost his composure in his desire to defend his friend.

Now this is where this arc starts to become the greatest of the whole series (in my opinion) important stuff for this and other arcs finally start to happen, Thorfinn starts showing more emotion than he ever did before, we get to hear more that's going on in Thorfinn's mind thats not anger and in the manga the art starts to become even more detailed than before (in the anime it's almost imposible to notice since the anime adapted it to the current artstyle of the manga)

"Do you think people can change?"
This question contains the essence of this story arc, and is is a very important point of what Yukimura wants to deliver with his story.
As for Thorfinn and his relationship with Askeladd, he never had a proper closure for that. He keeps saying he hated him, but is it all the truth? As you might have realized by watching the promo, next episode will provide more details on this point. But, before that, I suggest you to re-watch episode 10 of the first season.

Sverkel: "it's better to be empty… if you're to be reborn" I feel like it sums up perfectly what the story had in store for Thorfinn's character. I love that they're clearly friends which means our boy can open up more (I love it).

It's really messed up what those retainers did to their farm and as Einar said: "How can they do that as farmers?" Unforgivable.

Edit: Askeladd was a GREAT character, but I don't see how it's possible that Thorfinn loved that man and in the finale I felt so sorry for Thorfinn, who saw his purpose at the time snatched from him and his father words thrown at him by Askeladd… but I never felt sad for Askeladd's death although I respected how he went out saving Wales & Canute.

I swear I never thought I would cry over a Wheat Farm but here I am. This epsiode is like the best this season for me. Seeing thorfinns growth and the growth between his and einars relationship is just great. Also the punch was the most satisfyingly thing I've ever seen in an anime. They truly deserved that. But I'm also afraid of the next epsiode and of the consequences of thorfinns and einars reaction. Their Master might be kind to them but they are also just slaves. Slaves that attacked free men.

Plus the foreshadowing of Arnheidt makes me uneasy for sure

I dont think Thorfinn has any feelings of compassion for Askelaad. we know he always hated him with a passion. But that hatred became his whole life, he sleeps thinking about killing Askelaad, he devouted his entire life just to kill him and his entire life collapsed when Askelaad died. He wasnt devestated because he liked Askelaad, its because he wasnt the one who killed him. It was like Askelaad said: "what would you have done after you killed me?" Now that hatred has deminished and he doesnt have Askelaad there anymore, he is empty of any purpose or motivation. Askelaad wasnt a 'father figure' for Thorffin, he was more like the thing that kept Thorffin motivated.

Cant wait to see you react to the BIG NIGHTMARE next week!

I wish Thorfinn could be 100% himself like Mob.

I loved this episode, keep in mind Vinland Saga is a historical fiction, this depiction of slavery and discrimination is as real as it can get. Seeing Askeladd so much was a treat, a character who's influence is felt despite being dead…

Another thing I learned recently, the author of Vinland Saga, actually likes to travel to these european countries, to research and learn about the cultures going to be depicted in the story. That's so amazing to me, how much passion is put into this series to go through these lengths.

Watched this episode with my sister just now, it felt so good when Thorfinn fought against that one dude.
I thought it was him finally getting back at these dudes, for their treatment and all that. But when Sister made me realise something else, "OMG, he's trying to protect Einar".
I realised Thorfinn didn't slug him out of anger, basic slurs, and taunts wouldn't do that to someone like him. Thorfinn said it himself, "I deserve to be killed by you a hundred times over", in their last talk. Thorfinn, was willing to take all the punishment, just so Einar wouldn't have too, even in episode 4 it was like this. Because he believes he deserves it, and someone like Einar never deserved any of it, and the recently horrible experiences he's had. Realising this made me tear up, but Einar wasn't on the same page. So they'll face reprecautions… ALSO ASKELADD NEXT EP

👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

The second season is much deeper and more enlightening, and it's really wonderful. Besides, those farmhands should be glad they didn't repeat their prejudice against slaves in front of Askeladd, or they would have come to a very terrible end🤣

TryingBridge254 2023.02.28 - 5:02 pm

For the record, I don't think it's naive to believe people are capable of kindness.

Best punch ✊👊

It’s nice seeing thorfinn attacking/fighting for a selfless reason. We are getting close to one of my favorite moments!
