Incredible episode but also damn. Seeing the contrast between the MCs of two major MAPPA projects right now with Thorfinn and Eren is wild. No violence and ALL THE VIOLENCE 🤣
This isn't really a spoiler, specially since it's been 3 years since S1, but it is HEAVILY implied that the head of the Jomsviking DIDN'T want Thors dead, which is why Askeladd speculated that he was hired to kill Thors, to keep his assassination on the down low.
Since it was revealed later in S1 that Thorkell's brother, the head of the Jomsviking, wanted Thors to be the next leader of them (hence why he allowed Thors to marry Helga in the first place), it is likely that Floki had Thors assassinated to prevent any chance he would return to lead the Jomsviking, and probably put himself in that role.
Since he seems to be a pretty high up Jomsviking commander, at least high enough to speak directly to King Sweyn and later Canute, it seems his scheme worked.
It's unfortunate, but I agree that this will likely not get AotY, even though it most certainly deserves it imo. This season has been next to no action, and yet every Monday I absolutely cannot wait to tune in, and am 100% invested in the watch for the entire run time. Thus far, every ep. of season 2 has had me immensely satisfied and thinking the ep. was at least like 8+/10.

What a weekend MAPPA has had with this and AOT. Kinda crazy that we go from a world ending event of genocide in AOT to a man renouncing violence in Vinland Saga.

This arc is so well written there are soooo many things we can learn from. I’ve been waiting for this specific moment to be animated & I agree that Mappa did this ep justice.

Just feel the need to point out that when asked if this place was Valhalla, Askeladd laughs it off indicating it is somewhere else. So we should recall the Christian element in season 1 with the priest, what we could be seeing is one of the rings of hell similar to Dante's inferno.
Connected to this, we do have the option to believe this was not just a dream sequence.
1. Thorfinn never saw his father dressed to go to war, yet he somehow knows the armour we saw in the first episode ( perhaps it was in the chest, it has been a while since I watched the early season).
2. Dante's inferno was only written in 1300AD, whereas Vinland saga is set in 1000AD so Thorfinn would not be aware of the rings of Hell.
3. Conceptually there would be little reason for Thorfinn's mind to be so heavily influenced by the Christian concepts as he is not seen influenced by the Bible. We see things such as a descent through the ground as if going further into Hell. As much as we all like Thors and he has proven to be a good man, he also killed many people and that's why we see his victims crawl all over him while talking to Thorfinn; perhaps their talk was set in purgatory.
Now the story really begins. Will Thorfinn be able to keep his oath of no violence in a land where war and death thrive? We are in for a ride i'll tell you that
Eren crying: I'm sorry I'm gonna kill all of you.
Thorfinn crying: I'm sorry I killed all of you.
This episode really was 10/10.
Both this and AoT have had "best of all time" episodes in a span of a single week. Wow

Definitely anime of the year but i Still remember how that final fight KnY S2 Whoop my memory of how amazing attack on Titan episode that weekend
Gotta say, its terribly painful seeing thorfinn going to the deep of despair for a punch everyone would think that guy had deserved. he is so incredibly depressed although he doesn´t really understand it, that was enough to get into such a traumatic flashback and nightmares. and he was either about to slip into (you can assume the worst) but he choose to gather strenght, accept it and never be a violent man again. I love thorfinn.
So many MCs I say "that man is just like me fr fr", howrever thorfinn makes me think "I have to be someone like him". that makes him very special to me compared to anyother.

Thorfinn is just one of THOSE characters, y'know what I mean? Like a character that is so human and so real that they are able to transcend their series. Turning into icons of what a character should be.
Him and Guts are both on that level.
I read this part in the manga 3 years ago and it didn’t hit at the time cause I just wanted action, but after sleeping on it this oath is one of the best peaks of VLS
