This episode was on the level of Attack on Titan finale part 1. I couldn't stop crying throughout almost the whole episode. This was as beautiful as it gets! Absolutely incredible!
Probably the best episode of anime I have ever seen, I am in shock.
Awesome episode 👍😤🔥fire
I have had time to sit on this and discuss this with others so I am pretty tame compared to when I finished the episode but this episode was the first time where Vinland Saga presented something to me (via Thorfinn) that I rejected hard. Now again I have calmed down since and think it is a natural progression, but I already can't wait for him to see the limits of his new ideology which at the point of making his Oath is strict pacifism. Obviously I agree that violence should always be a last resort when needed to defend one's self or others who are having violence perpetrated against them. Just history and human nature shows the limitations of pure unfettered unyielding pacifism and it isn't any better than indiscriminate violence that you see on the other end of the spectrum of this discussion.
With that out of the way, the episode was great it really was and I do look forward to seeing how things play out going forward. Thorfinn is now actually going to be moving forward which is important for him and I want to see what this new development brings. The highlights for me were definitely Thors and Askeladd as father figures in Thorfinn's dream imparting the wisdom he needs to make this change for himself. Everything from the imagery to the voice acting in how it was all depicted and handled was truly beautiful and master class. This episode was a masterpiece, as the series has been in it's entirety up to this point. Honestly I don't know how this show keeps out doing itself because it seems like every week I am more and more blown away by Vinland Saga.
There are several series where the anime is better than the manga.
"Hunter x Hunter 2011" is one such example.
And "Vinland Saga" is another.
The anime adds so much more but takes away nothing.
Thorfinn will going new battle he need don't kill people see nightmare see all people kill in past he need change life same thing real life people doing mistake.
Reminds of the saying from cowboy bebop – “you’re gonna carry that weight” – honestly what askeladd was saying – don’t avoid it , confront it , accepts it and move on
This was a good ep of the show, thou I'm not a big fan of season 1, in my mind a large chunk of that, could easily been cut and you don't loose anything meaningful, thou that merely my view.
Man… What an episode… This episode changes Thorfinn for the better. He had been struggling to find a purpose this entire season so far but not anymore. Askelad even in death, he and Thors still find a way to advise Throfinn to keep fighting his battle of self worth and resentment towards everything he has done thus far.
It was so great to see and 95 percent of the episode we spent inside his mind and broken spirit. We have never seen Thorfinn cry ever since his father died and you can truly see the pain and regret he had for doing everything he did just to get revenge.
Truly an emotional episode but he is ready to be reborn and that is true character development. Leaving the past behind and focusing on improving themselves to be a better person. I'm so excited to see where we go from bere but Thorfinn's VA performance was top tier not to mention the art, the animation, the direction of the entire episode and the OST were just fantastic… I'd say this was my favourite episode of Vinland this far and I'm looking forward to see if the following episodes will top this one because boy… This was more than just 10/10
Great review Brandon.
Einar not making it through this season
this ep wa absolutly beautiful
o
at the end his father can finally leave him.
This was an incredible episode
This episode will be a modern classic.
One of my favourite anime episode ever, hit just as hard the manga
Sucks thorfin doesn't fight anymore.
Every episode has me wanting to see more and dad when I have to wait a week to do so but I’ll be OK, lol.
Askeladd has such a commanding presence and I love how he was depicted. Not as a grotesque beast like the warriors fighting but in his normal form. He’s on a pillar far above them, sipping beer and spewing wisdom. I always love seeing young Throfinn too
Man what an episode, I feel like I’ve said that before but it’s just so wow!! I mean seriously
And man it made me emotional, the part that really got to me was the “hell” scene with all the zombie corpses of Thorfinn’s victims climbing and grabbing onto him and then seeing the top one cry and Thorfinn breaking from the realization of his sins and saying sorry (while proceeding to weep)
In addition to some spectacular voice acting, there were some phenomenal animation parts that can be subtle or bigger but they’re still amazing nonetheless
Like that falling sequence with the weird “effects” that feel like “impact/pain” if that makes sense?
And the uncomfortably detailed/closeup shots of a sobbing face(snot and all!) and of course the fingers like you mentioned
It’s things like these that just really make you appreciate the animation medium
The writing and character development on this show is truly amazing. I was so moved by the self awakening found in his dream. Healing is a journey and Thorfinn is finally learning how to fill that empty space and fight the true battle
Love this ep.
the askeladd scene tops it all. damn
MAPPA is surely on a roll, giving us outstanding Attack on Titan and Vinland Saga episodes back to back!
7:21 i'm absolutely excited to see how Thorfinn would overcome this struggle, i feel like it's gonna be a long journey. Change doesn't happen overnight, and him realizing there's a new goal to achieve is just the first step (which is always the hardest).
The whole scene of the talk between Askeladd and Thorfinn and the scene from hell was amazing and well done. It’s good to see them not get punished for hitting the other farm hands. Hard to say which episode was the best but this definitely is a monumental one for Thorfinn and the series. Let’s see how far Thorfinn will get tested. The studio is definitely adding content to extend the runtime although it’s not bad since it does add context and add to the series. Seeing this kind of an arc in an anime is quite rare and as rare as seeing a character not achieve their revenge like Thorfinn couldn’t. I find it interesting that while Thorfinn avoids violence, Einar will still use it and especially if something angers him. Could see conflict between them or differing perspectives happening with them throughout the story when they’re together. And I agree Thorfinn’s VA is phenomenal with how emotional he can get. And I can’t help but feel the VAs also sound very much like how Vikings would sound. It’s definitely a different kind of series this season and what the series was truly meant to be. And for all the people who complain, I’m pretty sure real life Thorfinn wasn’t a fighter and he was only an explorer so the series is already quite a bit more exciting than his real life version. We definitely can get a season 3 fairly soon since the content is ready and the final 4th season also. The manga is VERY close to finishing if it hasn’t already. Splitting up the series into the 4 different manga arcs is for the best. I can only imagine that maybe the director or animation time might take a break from the series like they did after season 1
Thorfinn will be tested on his new oath to never hurt anyone again in this series . If we get lucky enough to get a season 3 we will see Thorfinn tested.
I think people seem to forget how easy it is to destory and kill. It's alot harder to create , preserve and protect. Thorfinn's vow is not a easy one nor is his journey to peace a easy one. Considering how fucked up our world is and how violence seems inevitable. I just honestly respect Thorfinn's change and desire to be a kinder person. People say they hate pacifist but honestly the new Thorfinn is a breath of fresh air. Thorfinn's efforts to try and break the cycle of violence and killing is honestly in my mind is poetic. Considering all the atrocities committed by individuals everyday and everywhere. Thorfinn didn't let him self become tainted anymore and by being empty is becoming a better man and person.
Many people who become tainted never come back and remain tainted. Thorfinn in a way is lucky . Because not many people are able to come back from that. When you've killed for so long, most keep doing what they do. Because of said environment or circumstances. But Thorfinn didn't allow the time period or environment control him anymore. He's changed . And for that I couldn't be happier. Because he felt remorse and agony in a way saved him from becoming like all the other warriors in hell.
Also damn seeing Askeladd this episode was chilling. Low-key still sad over his death. This entire episode was sad but oddly hopeful in a way. And I cried alot during this episode so you know it hit me in the feels.
Also hearing Askeladd say bring those you've killed with you, I felt like he was saying uplift those voices on you're journey for now on. Don't forget them , those you've killed.
I agree with what you said about Thorfinn's VA. Thank you for bringing it up. He is very talented and is doing a brilliant job in the show. At the beginning of the episode, when Thorfinn had a peaceful dream, I was surprised to hear such an innocent and pure voice from him. For a moment, I even thought it was a different person.
Powerful episode. Seeing accountable Thorfinn power through his living Hell was immensely satisfying.
