an otaku ( Oh- Tah- ku ) is basically someone with an obsession about something.
It implies that someone has a large collection of manga, figures and merch in the anime sense but can also mean someone who collects a lot of collectables or football cards.
It is kind of the next level of weeb.

Buddy Daddies is an AMAZING show! You'd love the shit out of it! You got it right the first time, Otaku Elf is about a fantasy elf that somehow got summoned into our world, gets treated as a local deity and turns into a nerd. I'm actually kinda surprised Otaku Elf is one of the best shows this season. There are so many bangers and that's such a chill show that I wasn't expecting it to be among the best.
About your question in the end: She is a real elf and she is also an otaku, the most similar words for otaku in english are "nerd" and "geek" but not the same thing, she is obssessed with games, collectible toys, etc.
You should check out the original Trigun. It's a classic. I don't know about this remake or is it a sequel? I don't know.
To keep it short, "otaku" is about the equivalent of "nerd" in the English vocabulary. When you call someone an otaku, you're basically calling them a nerd. As you've googled, the term can be applied to anyone of any topics, as long they're enthusiastic about it. However, in the western culture, "otaku" is almost always referring to anime fans, and can be a degrading term depending on context. So the anime you saw, "Otaku Elf", is basically about an (actual) elf who's obsessed with games and anime and always hole in her room all day long.
On a side note, yes that's Ayase's voice in the Buddy Daddy opening. I wish he'd sing more. He has a nice voice. If you like it, I'd recommend his self-cover of "Yuurei Tokyo" (Ghost Tokyo), originally a Vocaloid song he produced.

Oh Trigun: Stampede.Trigun is kind of an all time classic 90s anime, and Trigun: Stampede is…connected to it. I won't say HOW, since that's a spoiler, but when you realize, it's a REALLY cool connection. This one is animated by Studio Orange, who are basically the kings of 3D anime at this point. Land of the Lustrous, Beastars, Trigun: Stampede, all the expressive animation with all the fluidity you'd expect from animators who don't have to draw every pose by hand, plus camera moves to match, since smoother camera movement would mean more frames to draw in hand drawn anime, posing 3D models don't have to worry about that.
It's a space western with fun, energetic characters and interesting moral philosophies, both the original 90s anime and Stampede. Purists might not like some of the redesigns and 3D animation, but if you didn't grow up with it, and can make the adjustment if you did, they're both fantastic, and some visual changes aside, Stampede is completely faithful to the source material, especially to protagonist Vash the Stampede. The connection I talked about earlier blew my mind when I realized what it was. I went in thinking it was a remake/retelling of the original story with new visuals and slicker animation.
Worth watching both if you find the chance. Lot of shows to get through. Also, the massive one you're thinking of is probably Cowboy Bebop. Very different shows, both worth your time.
Trigun Stampede is very good but can have some mixed feeling from the older anime community. it's a remake of a beloved series from the 90s and there were a lot of changes made in the new series, one of which removing one of the favorite side characters Milly. i would definitely recommend you checking out trigun, whether it's the new Trigun Stampede or the original series.
Otaku just refers to an anime/game fan, so otaku elf is about an elf that becomes an otaku. from what i've heard (haven't watched it myself yet), she becomes a bit of a shut in that mostly reads manga, watches anime, plays games, that sort of thing. the elf is also acting as the goddess of a shrine though, which she neglects when left to her own devices, so the anime is about the shrine maiden's efforts to drag the elf out of her room and have her do her duties as the shrine deity.
This Trigun is new adaptation of manga, previous series is from 1998, so if you watch both you could compare them.
Interesting thing about Buddy-Daddies is that it is unexpectedly good anime which primarily explores mens' emotions. It is somehow both lighthearted and mature. And I think as a father here you will see a lot of stuff you could relate to. Also it is a 12 episode fully finished story, which is quiet rare nowadays. I definitely recommend to give it a watch!

It's a remake of the story of Vash the Stampede. Its a sci-fi western inspired anime where humanity ended up on a desert planet where is hard to survive. Vash has a bounty on his head but he's honestly the sweetest guy.
I don't want to spoil more but it took my #1 spot of anime of he year! It's well animated and emotional!
Ahhh Luke's first interaction with otaku! It is a very common term used to describe those who really enjoy anime and anime related things. Wide range of like from even your level to some really creepy and depraved stuff.
"Trigun: Stampede" is a reboot of a 1998 "Trigun". I absolutely think that as much as the opening good in the new show, you should definitely watch a 1998 anime first. It is better in almost everything except, maybe, the animation quality. Also it'd be cool to see you reaction to an old opening, it's quite unusual😁
In the west, "otaku" is a term that essentially means a huge fan of anime/manga/japanese light novels, all that stuff. Essentially, the less derogatory version of "weeb" or "weeabo", since those can sometimes be used by non-anime fans when they look down on otaku, or by otaku themselves to call someone a "fake otaku". There are many nuances to it though and meaning is more or less based on the intent behind it.
In Japan, it can also mean the same thing, but "otaku" would mean something like an "afficionado". For example, a "history otaku" would be a fervent history enthusiast.
