Vinland saga is testing everybody's limits, to see if you still choose not to use violence. But after seeing a lot of people's reaction, sadly they're definitely choosing violence

Personally I'm more pissed at Canute over all this than I am Ketil. He started this whole chain of events that made Ketil finally snap. Poor Arnheid just had the extreme misfortune of being the final straw when he broke. If it hadn't been for all the mess during the trip, then Ketil probably would have been far more inclined to be merciful towards her the same way he was with those children before the trip. And now at this point he's probably going to get himself killed by Canute's men (and frankly probably should after this). But annoyingly that just gives Canute what he wants.

I'm new here but is it me or does she have two different eye colors?

Hiding in a barrel like a child and then going to beat up a helpless woman just doesn't sit well with me, he's a weak minded man…She's a slave whose husband came back anyone would try to leave, why would she stay because you don't beat her and just sleep with her while your wife clearly hates her for this? What a great life….I guess he was not thinking clearly but still he just acts pathetic, both his sons where way more composed than this. I get why people try to defend him but as a person who respects a strong mind to me he fell off hard

Poor Ketil and Arnheid.

.

Arnheid's life is punished because of two bad decisions.

1. Gardar decides to fight for prosperity.

2. Arnheid decides to take the chance to escape with Gardar.

If she had chosen Ketil and told him about the pregnancy, he probably would have fled with her to start over and she could have had a fresh start with her second child.

.

Ketil's life is completely turned upside down because of Canute's goal to create a utopia.

He comes home, is haunted by death and is almost on the verge of a mental breakdown and seeks attention from the only person he trusts. His family is a mess. His first son a cold-blooded warrior, his second son a hopeless case and a cold wife (probably a political/arranged marriage) who could not give him any warmth in all these years. He then learns that his second love is trying to abandon him to flee with another man. This was the final stroke to turn him from a lifelong pacifist into the true "Iron Fist Ketil". After all these events, he makes the terrible decision to take out his anger on Arnheid.
.

What I would like to know is how this relationship started in the first place. Was it love at first sight for Ketil or did he slowly fall in love with her over time because she played the perfect obedient slave wife for him.

I feel so bad for Arnheid shes going thru so much its truly devastating i hope she gets out that farm asap b4 Canute arrives.

The scene with Arnheid and Ketil. Like I forget when was the last time some scene in any anime made me this angry (my blood was legit boiling) and uncomfortable. This was hard to watch. The way it was directed, the sound design, the music and the voice acting by Arnheid and Ketil's voice actors made this scene tough to witness. And this was pretty realistic (as much I hate to say it) because actual slave owners in our world would in fact do horrible stuff like this. Poor Arnheid 😢. I feel absolutely horrible for her (specially after she lost Gardar in the previous episode).

And Ketil (I do see why he turned out like this fragile man like him who can lose their minds when loads of bad stuff happen to them), he turned out to be one of the most horrible characters to ever exist. I hate him more then Mr Tucker from Fullmetal Alchemist BH and King Fritz from Attack on Titan (and we all know how horrible those two guys were so Ketil coming on this list is quite an achievement).

Beating up a woman, even if she's his slave, seems to make any man a villain, it's something that makes everything "black or white" very easy. I see few talk about the manipulative wife, who used the right words to convince the weakened husband, in a panic attack, to attack his slave, which she, the wife, hates so much. It seems clear to me that she intended for Ketil to overdo the beating and kill the poor slave.

To put Ketil on the bad team only after this episode is to deny that he was already on the bad team from the beginning, and gained attention for being the least bit kind and avoiding the stereotyped villainous figure. For me, he is an excellent character with enough depth to make you think about different subjects, just like Askelad.

Everything I dreaded and then a whole lot more. Very difficult to watch. Sad and disgusting, really depressing/infuriating too. What a shitshow, and Canute on his way (with POS Ketil hellbent on joining Thorgil in his folly of getting everybody killed). This kind of situation has got to be exactly the type of shit Snake's men were fleeing/hiding from… I think Leif is going to save some people, maybe a lot. Who knows, he might die given how fucked everything is.

KugelblitzNB 2023.05.09 - 7:44 am

I think it was not that bad.
Compared to Thorfinns body count, that‘s nothing.

Commas 2023.05.09 - 7:57 am

hard watch indeed, my blood boiled for arnheid. she's like a punching bag atp.

Kaizuko Kage 3 years ago 2023.05.09 - 7:58 am

Ketil endangered not only her life but one of a child that had nothing to do with any of their problems.

Nyarlathotep 2023.05.09 - 7:59 am

I find ketil to be a demonstration that there is no such thing as a good slave owner. It's all a mask. I do feel sympathy for him but……

Maryam Tara 2023.05.09 - 8:04 am

Saying "ungrateful slave" is so laughable, why would a person a human NOT want their freedom?

As a manga reader I was trying to brace myself for this part but regardless it was hard to watch. I wanted to like Ketil with the way he was presented at the beginning as a kind master and I know he was losing it after finding out Canute was planning to send his armies after his farm, but the change in his character was almost too drastic to believe, I guess the takeaway is that he's just a piece of crap.

RobMarley 2023.05.09 - 9:11 am

Great point on how everything could’ve been different had Ketil been able to fight for his original lover.

Ethan Augur 2023.05.09 - 9:20 am

My boy Gardar really would’ve beat the bricks off ketil.

Sandeep Bisht 2023.05.09 - 9:47 am

I hope Ketil dies brutally in the upcoming battle with Canute's forces.

emargold 2023.05.09 - 10:11 am

this episode was so hard to watch… I mean I understand the writing and intention behind it and it's depicted realistically. However…
Ketil real problem is the King (the Thief who wants to steal the land from him) – he just let it out on Arnheid… so stupid, so short-minded, so impulsive…. I wanted to scream at the screen so many times this episode…

Noona 91 2023.05.09 - 10:47 am

That was really hard to see without crying, poor Arnheid 😭 I hope the worse for Ketil to happen by Canute idc he deserved it for sure!! I hate him

Woleinre 2023.05.09 - 11:06 am

In Askeladd’s and Kenny Ackerman’s words:”everyone is a slave to something.”
Ketil’s “something” ironically happens to be Arnheid and his deluded form of pride
