Belz I love how you are questioning the text and pondering it's meaning beyond what is explicitly shown on-screen. As a manga reader I did not think about the implications about Pater's comments or Ketil's true nature. In real life things do not exist in a vaccum, so why should it in fiction?
1:45 I wanna believe he hasn’t hit her before, but someone who beats on someone else that brutally surely can’t be a first time thing. But manga readers might no differently. Just incase you didn’t catch it, pretty sure the second child died, just the baby being there shows, not to mention Gardar saying ‘me and the children will be waiting for you’
The reason we didn’t see Leif & Thorfinn reunite and have a moment is because they didn’t have one, they didn’t have time to process their reunion, both became connected because of Arnheids beating and probably came together right outside the cabin she was recovering from so they didn’t have a moment of “ahh we unite again! You’ve grown up” its more like they made eye contact and both understood the situation and walked in. This moment in the episode is the actual reunion of them
Beating up a woman, even if she's his slave, seems to make any man a villain, it's something that makes everything "black or white" very easy. I see few talk about the manipulative wife, who used the right words to convince the weakened husband, in a panic attack, to attack his slave, which she, the wife, hates so much. It seems clear to me that she intended for Ketil to overdo the beating and kill the poor slave. I really don't think he's ever executed so much punishment against Arnheid. She has never been shown injured thus far in the narrative, even though years have passed in this arc.
To put Ketil on the bad team only after this episode is to deny that he was already on the bad team from the beginning, and gained attention for being the least bit kind and avoiding the stereotyped villainous figure. For me, he is an excellent character with enough depth to make you think about different subjects, just like Askelad.
Poor fucker is just so done he doesn't knows what to do but go on a rampage.That's exactly how many men are today: the high taxes, the government stealing some of their hard-earned work, responsibility for the family, misfit children… We are charged with an almost magical ancestral strength to support all of this
1:30, It is normal to sleep with his slave at this point in human history, but what the narrative showed us is that he shared sedus weaknesses with his slave, which configures a very strong emotional dependence relationship. It wouldn't be difficult for him never to have hit her, because being his slave she followed her orders without batting an eye.
Let me just say this. Assuming Einar went mad & Thorfinn failed to stop him, do you have any idea how many people Thorfinn would kill for Einar alone??? So that Einar survives, it would show how much Thorfinn's friends meant to him and what he's truly capable of. Believe me, Thorfinn cracked once, next time he's gonna be no better than Eren.

The treatment Ketil received from King Canute was one-sided and I have some sympathy for him, but his treatment of Arnheid is equally one-sided and I have no sympathy for him in this regard. However, I felt that what the author, Yukimura Sensei, wants us to think about is not the goodness or badness of Ketil's character or deeds. At the very least, Ketil was inherently averse to violence, but it was "rage" that kept driving him to make the wrong choices. I think the root of conflict is "rage", and the tragedy caused by the inability to control it is what this story is warning us about.
Now I wonder if Arnheid was happy that her husband had reformed when she saw him again. Had Ghadar remained an honor-first Viking, she might have given him up and not been on the verge of death. Although I would never consider it happiness to give up many things and live as a slave, I have extremely mixed feelings about her circumstances.

The argument of Ketil not hitting Arnheid before is very obvious. They EVEN shown a special episode where Ketil was so hesitant and sentimental to hurt those 2 young thieves stealing in his farm just to make it OBVIOUS that it is not his character to hurt anyone. That is a fact and I can't believe that you can't even see that. It was pretty obvious that he Snapped at Canute betraying him. They even showed him cowling inside a barrell and being not his normal self. Show blatantly gave those Details just to guide your understanding about their characters.
Well he asked her to be bought because he knew she would be punished, she was already "arrested", and also they are about to go to a lost war. He probably thinks Leif is their only way out alive. So it just speaks on Pater's kindness and care rather than there being more violent incidents with Arnheid.
Wait, why would Snake not be as strong as you thought? Throfinn said he is the fastest he has ever faced, even faster than Thorkell and Askeladd, Snake is a monster.
Sleeping with a slave was normal, it was basically a service that comes along with buying a slave. If you can kill a slave without repercussions then sleeping with them wasn't even a major thing (back then)
I agree with Mel, she dying very soon. If she was just unconscious or a different injury..then I could see her lasting longer. But she dying and she's getting to farewell. That's how I been seeing it. Same way they basically did gardar.
I get your point that now everything is on doubt since he hit her this time, however, it was normal at that time for powerful men to have multiple women, even if they were slaves, to satisfy his needs besides his wife if he was married, so sleeping with slaves was normal. Even black slave master's in america use to sleep with some of their slaves.
We would have seen arnheid injured or bruised, and arnheid herself said that ketil would protect her and the child and they could have a good life there. So it was the first time ketil beat her
Honestly the anime original parts with the wagon in the afterlife are peak I can't thank MAPPA enough for going above and beyond for an iconic seinen manga FARMLAND SAGA PEAK FICTION

Gardar says “I’ll wait for you here with the children” that means the baby has been dead, most likely died during her beating.

The wolf and the deer represent Einar and Thorfinn. Thorfinn very first kill is with a lone wolf
