Well, I was told that the Nier Series is supposed to be depressing to watch, play, and read.
Wasn't too keen on the first episode but really liked this one. Didn't think a robot could make me feel so sad

i absolutely loved this episode. as someone who playerd the game im soo happy to see this.
was kinda anxious it would just animefy the game so wasn't sold with the first episode, but this def sold it for me.

im really glad were getting content like this, this was what i was hoping for, not just a retelling of all the games events but brand new content and more exploration of the world as well, its been a while since i played the game but if im not mistaken everything with that flower robot was brand new scenes added in this anime.
i cant wait for the next episode to see how they do with what i think is coming up next judging by that tease at the end
Yes, besides the opening and the ending songs, the music is taken straight from the game (thankfully, since it's one if the best video game sound tracks of all time).
I feel like this episode proves that while yes, they aren't doing 1:1 translation of the game, they are putting in the work to make the story work for the different medium.

The game really wants you to differentiate between the two so it kind of gets confusing when explaing out loud.
Apparently Lily wasn’t ever shown in the game just mentioned. The games are depressing from what I know and have heard. I think only Love Death and Robots deals with some of these concepts often. Apparently they are all androids or robots and humans are all on the moon. Fire Hunter is another post apocalyptic anime that recently came out too
as someone who loves the game and was having doubts when the first episode came out, this episode gave me faith that these people know what to do when adopting a video game into a TV show.

The anime will be one the heartbreakers this season
While I wasn't impressed with the first episode, basically feeling like it was retreading and cramming what was essentially an hour long prologue, I do have to commend Yoko Taro once again, for introducing Nier's themes of our inherent humanity and the struggles within that same aspect, while also doing it in a way that wasn't even in the game.
This show could be intringuing for those who haven't played the game, in one way or another (if you now what I mean ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ), and also an expansion of what NieR fans have come to expect from something penned by the series creator, some of which speculate that concepts from the parent series Drakengard/Dragoon Dragoon might make it into this anime, given that they've shown us elements that were exclusive to other side media, such as the robot and flower thing, and specially Lily who was an essential character from a stage play depicting events that predate the game/anime, and not only that but this part of the story might also close the gap in one of the oversights of the game itself, also be prepared to get your rug from under getting pulled.
I'm curious to see where the story goes, but beware, if there's one thing we know, is that Yoko Taro's stuff tends to be incredibly dreadful, hopeless and disturbing, but it will probably have a hopeful pay off, and I just adore his unapologetic approach to writing and story telling, only time will tell for us to see how these ideas will be executed in this format.
I played Replicant first, then Automata, and now reading “short story long” and watching the anime in tandem. The first episode made me think they were going to combine the narratives of each play-through of the game and just stick to that. Then we get the second episode which shows a whole different perspective from the machines and new story. I have to say as a newer fan to the lore of Yoko Taro’s works, this anime is just going to add so much more to love about Nier’s franchise as a whole. Yoko Taro is a damn genius and knows how to convey a message of emotion in such a powerful way. Hope you keep enjoying the anime and invest more into the lore/play the games cause Yoko’s work is top-notch material! 👏
This is exactly what I hoped for, stories from different perspectives that still hold the themes of the games intact. I am so happy with how beautiful the show looks and how much attention to detail has been put in. It really feels like a passion project 🙂
The second episode sold me on this show. Nier is my favourite game series of all time and after the first episode I was very worried it would just be a flat retelling of Automata. The second episode is what Nier is about. That’s what newcommers should expect and it’s why game fans should be interested. New lore and meaningful interractions. Of course, obligatory reminder to everyone who hasn’t done so yet, play at least Nier Automata.
Oh, and also don’t flatly believe everything you see or hear in this. Both the bad and good things are…somewhat mislreading. Lastly, bit of a correction; the machines are not androids. Androids are made in the image of humanity, machines are purely utilitarian
Also, to fellow Nier veterans: don’t go spoiling anything. Let Taro’s story be told as it should.
