Shane Burcaw (he/him) is the author of several award-winning books about disability. He is the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah Burcaw (she/her) graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog, which has over 1,000,000 subscribers on YouTube. Hannah has spoken at prestigious universities and Fortune 500 companies alike about the realities of ableism. On her popular Instagram account, she advocates for acceptance of all people and works to improve the way society thinks about disability.
Shane and Hannah have been together for over four years. They got married in September of 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic in their backyard, with their officiant conducting the ceremony via Zoom. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.

You can do this❤❤❤❤❤
Hannah you have been born for such a time as this ❤
Shane is so loving and supportive but funny. You are so lucky
I prefer to lie down and do it I do it everyday for pregnancy related issues once u do it I just get used to doing it xx
She said call 911 😂 awe you got this girl! Good job! ❤❤ I coule only imagine how you were feeling.
Oh my gosh! I was so emotional for you. When you finally injected yourself, I cried. I’m so invested in your journey already.
Hannah you did so good!! And Shane your an amazing support to her!
You should call your doctor's office and ask them if they have auto injectors… When I first started doing my MS treatment I was petrified of giving myself a shot so they gave me an auto injector…. Takes a little getting used to but it works out wonderfully.
👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍
First disinfect the injection area. Next pet your dog. Then touch the disinfected area with your dog hand a couple of times. 🙄
I'll tell you something: I'm an MD, and I used to stick all kinds of sharp things in all kinds of people. But when I need to give myself a blood thinner through a tiny needle into my belly before travelling, I need my mommy, because I can't do it myself. I can totally relate to your hesitation. But you made it, you're a hero!
Highly recommend getting an auto injector by Union Medico. Fast and painless, especially for the subcutaneous injections in the bum. Comes really in handy for when you begin PIO injections for your transfers. You got this!
You done it ! Go You Beautiful girl.
I would have been the same as you trying to give myself an injection.
Your on your way now ❣️
Been watching you guys for a while. I’ve learned a lot from you guys and have had lots of laughs also. I really appreciate you guys sharing this very personal part of your journey. So real and raw. Can’t wait to see more. Wishing you all the best! You will both be awesome parents! ❤️
About 10 minutes into the video and my feet are sweating from you having to do this😅 and my feet only get sweaty if I know I have to g get any sort of injection
I am proud for you Hannah. You conquered your fear.
Hannah, you're a rock star! This is SO relatable! 😄
Once you get the first one over it's smooth sailing. I barely even remember giving myself injections for my IVF cycles as they were just a minor inconvenience.
im currently 12 weeks prego and i can say that those ultrasound tables make my back hurt every time. its like a bench where my feet dangle off and i have bad posture and i always hate it lol. good luck!! you can do it.
Yea you!
Hey yall. I don't watch all the time…i do as often as possible but i just wanted to say i wish yall the best of luck! Its a tough road but so worth it. You're going to make great parents ❤
Before long, it wont bother you at all. Remember diabetics do it twice a day.
Well done. If you put your back out, is there someone who can help lift Shane?
Just stick the needle in 😂😂 I’m getting anxious now haha
Please don’t phone 911, you signed up for this, there will be so many appointments involving pokes and probes. You will get used to it in due time.
I had gestational diabetes with both of my pregnancies. Thankfully I didn't need insulin and was able to control it with diet but I still had to poke my finger 4 times a day and every. single. time. I had to hype myself up. I know it's a little different but the fear is real and you will get through it because should everything go as planned there will be a precious baby, zero regrets, and 100% worth it ❤️
Well, the effects of icing have worn off with all the delaying
I just watched a 20 year old give herself these injections because she has cancer and wants to freeze some eggs before they remove an ovary. She did the injections beautifully so you can do it to. Think of why you are doing this and what the end result will be.
Stroking the dog and then touching your belly again, Nope. The lenght of the video eventually did the trick. About the back ache. You probably had a mild case of lumbago because of the stress. Remember to be gentle with yourself and not twist and bend your back at the same time.
“Do I call 911”😂
Im so sorry. 😥 We really need it to be easier to be looked at.
Famous last words
“ It didn’t even hurt “
You are a star . I couldn't do that
Nooooo :O oh Hannah I'd be freaking out too! You did fantastic!!
I just had a vision of the dad jokes we are about to experience hahaha
This was me at the eye doctor with the machine that checks your eye pressure haha
I did IVF three times for 2 surrogacy journeys. The first shot is the hardest. I didn't get the belly shots the first time, I had larger needles that they have you put in your "love-handle" area, that you can't really see what you're doing, and those were super intimidating! You've got this! Best of luck!
Congratulations to you both on the start of your parenthood journey!! Hannah you are awesome for being able to do this and push yourself through it! I’m cheering for you🎉
I love reading the comments and seeing everyone’s hearts swooning over Shane’s supportiveness. As someone who also had to learn how to give themselves an injection, he did a great job just talking through it, which is really the only thing you can do to best support someone having to do this💓 You both rock and I can’t wait to see how your journey continues to unfold! Best of luck always from a long time supporter(-:
Shane was so supportive! When I was pregnant with my daughter the Dr discovered a clot in my ultrasound. That's when it was discovered I have factor vleiden. I had to give myself a shot twice daily for a blood thinner. I had 3 options backside upper arm, stomach, or my inner upper leg. I chose inner upper leg. I couldn't bare myself to inject myself so I asked my ex if he could because he injected cows before with a shot. That was a mistake because he jabbed it hard like he would have on a cow. I learned from that moment I would rather do it & I hesitated like Hannah until I did it. I was amazed it wasn't as bad as I had thought. Lol it definitely felt better when I did it vs when my ex pretty much stabbing it in like I was a cow.
Shane you made me want to cry in this video! You were so encouraging to her. Keep it up you 2, you guys are so sweet. You CAN do it Hannah. You did it!
Too bad he cant do it
You've got this hannah good luck to you both!
I took 20 minutes for my B12 injections and said, F it and went to my neighbor who’s a retired nurse who did them for me, lol.
Dont sit there and look at it. Just literally start counting in your head and just stab it in. The needle itself already doesnt hurt, but just the distraction mentally helps.
So proud of you sweetheart. The outcome will be so worth it
I’m glad that things look good to go. I hope that all goes well- from the injections, to the egg retrieval, to the fertilization, to the implantation, to the pregnancy, labor, and delivery- I pray all goes well. Hang in there Hannah. Great job being supportive Shane.
Shane had me LOL'ing and giggling so many times…love him SO much and adore you both!
