last time thorfinn met canute he slashed his face and Canute killed his dad. their interaction will be amazing
28:00, well, as I think, in terms of bet, the vikings must to take Torfinn to Canute, if he wins, but Canute doesn’t necessarily have to talk with him
No wonder this episode is called "Courage". Olmar finally got the courage to say he can never be like his big brother Thorgil right to his face. He spoke out from both his heart and mind on how he felt on the whole "Norse warriors must fight and die proud" nonsense he was always fed with specially by his big brother. He's legitimately scared for his life after seeing how brutal a war or a battle really is. Plus he also saw the burden of killing a human being for the 1st time. He doesn't want to become a cold blooded warrior who experiences all these things. The decison Olmar made here was indeed courageous, smart and not cowardly at all. This was the 1st time Olmar admitted his faults and was honest with himself. No wonder the old master was right that despite Ketil losing his farm, his son Olmar turned into a proper man.
Thorgil was a man of his time, the quintessential Viking man respected for his Viking values and who was brought up as such. He would fit like a glove with the rest of the Kings guards and Jomsvikings. In essence he is pretty much the same man as Bjorn, except that we got to see the other aspects of Bjorn’s personality through his relationship with Thorfinn and Askeladd.
Best line on the all opera on the next episode🗿
9:52 he is good enjoyable character. Him being bad person doesn't meant he is noy likeble as a character. Its like Beatris in Harry Potter, horrible person, but fun to read/watch how she acts.
Imagine if it was Guts instead of Thorfinn.
Ketil and his family "if they were to surrender" then they will be banished from denmark and have to leave everything they own!! And to move to another country without having anything meaning they will become instant slaves or just roam the foreign land like beggers!
Thorgil is such a "chad" meme:
>shows up
>beats up a kid
>gets in a fight with the king's guard
>tries to assassinate canute
>swims away
>when they decide to surrender he says " see ya cowards"
>leaves
Exactly! I'm one of the ONLY people who doesn't find Thorgil appealing. He's too much of a liability.
Thorgill is badass . Thats why people like him . There are so many people who are asshole but even you like them like Gojo of JJK and so many others .
The question , why are people liking Olmar . Just because there was a music behind his lame monologue of acceptance doesnt mean he is right , he is still same old same old.
Olmar is still stupid , he thinks prison is a paradise . He still acting like he could take on the life of a prisoner who went against the king . But once he would face that life he would cry again , as pathetic as he is . Just like he thought he could take on the life of a warrior . I would love to see his face when prison gaurds would beat the shit out of him on daily basis , give him shitty food and water , treat him like dust ,and make him work like an animal . Then i want him to say with such confidence that he would rather surrender then fighting for his honor.
Thorgill is right , honor is more important that your life .
Some cowards and losers wants to live a long life but some people want to live whatever short life they have but like an emperor .
People die one day , everybody does , whatever left is your legacy to remain for centuries.
We know so many legends of past ,who lived short lives but their legacyis still remaining , their honor is still remembered.
How many people do you know who didnt fight and surrendered in the name of peace but in reality they are just afraid of dying . Ofcourse , everyone is afraid of dying but we all remain nobody in the history , those who arent afraid , these people write history .
If i had been in place of Olmar , i would have chose to fight , cuz the right time to surrender was when he was being mocked , and the last time to surrender was when Canute entered their farm with the army . I would have surrendered back then , now is too late .
Now is not the time to surrender . Its do or die now .
(hugs Olmar)
manga
Thorfinn did talk about repaying their kindness
Einar gets angry saying Ketil just killed Arnheid
he responds with forget the master I want to repay the kindness of the old master, snake, Pater
I prefer this because although the master was reasonable to them and they could earn their freedom ( still enslaved…)
he had just killed her so it felt off him including paying the master for his kindness in this episode
manga
Einar talks to him before he leaves, Thorfinn only says he forgot something Einar knows that's not true
but I did like them including Leif trusing him and seeing he had changed
wish they had included to me is important that he is following his Dad but taking it a step further
he said to Einar it's not enough to have Vinalnd as a peacful place but let the rest burn
his Dad did the right thing and walk away and create a good place for his family but he did nothing to stop what was going on
probably didn't see that he could, which is fair enough
but Thorfinn wants to prevent things for getting worse if he can
yes that is shown here obviously
but I think it would have been important to include it
he's not just helping because they helped him and shown kindness
but creating somwhere safe for them isnt enough
not sure I've explained this well but I wish they had included that his reasons are beyond just whats happening at the farm
There's actually a trick, you have to turn your head as you take the blow
Their punishement was exile, meaning they were supposed to leave everything behind and leave the country (branded outlaw, if return they are free to be killed legally)
I can't take the word shorty seriously anymore lmao
Netflix uses the word midget which i imagine vikings would use as an insult
When Thorgil ran off in the manga we actually got an info card that said he was never seen or heard of again. He just disappeared into the distance to be a warrior somewhere, probably got killed. Through his violent path, he left no legacy.
9:45
I disliked that take.
love him or hate him but saying that he's a dick is objectively wrong.
Thorgil is one of the few warriors in the series that actually care about his family and has a sense of brotherhood. maybe not emotionally attached but he still got the responsibility of the big brother. how many times has he cheered up Olmar already and had him by his side? Thorgil's warrior pride is what makes him want to get the dirtiest out of Olmar when Olmar doesn't seem like he wants to, but it's not really Thorgil's mistake cus he is used to battle and knows that Olmar "loves battle". Thorgil doesn't meet his family alot after joining Canute's forces hence why he has structured this fallacy about Olmar, if Olmar confessed before Canute's raid Thorgil won't lump him into all of this, hell! maybe Ketil would've been more rough on him. cus he's sick of hearing of how much Olmar "loves war".
the last scene where Thorgil got irritated and pushed Olmar was due to how sensitive the time was for Olmar to confess, cus Thorgil and Snake were ready to battle.
and if you question the difference between Snake and Thorgil's reactions, idk maybe cus one is 10 years older than the other🤯.
anyways the take really caught me off guard cus regardless if anyone liked Thorgil or not I thought everybody agreed that he's a good brother
Ya know what I find hilariously ironic? The number of people who show contempt for Olmar as a character for being mentally and emotionally weak/cowardly (up to this point) but then don't have that same degree of contempt for Ketil, the father who Olmar basically became a mirror of and who is an actual FULL GROWN "man" who was even more mentally and emotionally weak and cowardly than his son was. I never got the white hot contempt for Olmar who was VERY OBVIOUSLY being set up for what is happening right now, it was clear as day that Olmar would develop and do the work that his POS father Ketil spent his whole life running from and that Ketil would be exposed for the POS that he is. I have also highly looked forward to this from Olmar as a character. Though I do think, due to his limited perspective and his own role in the events that happened that he is shouldering more of the responsibility than he actually bears. The main driving force and number 1 responsible party for all this death is 100% objectively Canute, after that I'd argue Ketil is next in line and then a fight for 3rd place between Olmar and Thorgil. Thankfully though he is looking at things more clearly and now acting in line with his actual values and who he wants to be which is great to see, surrender here is the correct move but little homie needs to get a tiny bit more proper perspective about his role here and how responsible he is.
Easy to "like" or more so "respect" Thorgil because he is grounded in who he is and what he believes. Yes I don't agree with his exact beliefs as they are foolish and moronic, however he is true to himself. By that same extension I respect Canute but I hate him as well because fuck all authoritarians, every single person who wants to rule or thinks it's a good idea to have humans ruling over other humans I disagree with to the bottom of my soul. Just a respect thing, I know where Thorgil is coming from and while I don't agree at least he is himself. Unlike some other trash, not just in this story but even in modern times hell ESPECIALLY in modern times lots of fakers and pretenders out there.
ANIME HISTORY ABOUT TO BE MADE NEXT EPISODE‼️
I wonder where Drott the Bear Killer got his scar from 💀
Love Olmar's arc theres a similar type of character in Vagabond, that I like alot. Not the exact same character but there are some similarities.
The reason ppl "like" Thorgil isnt much about him being a nice person. And most likely, in a real life scenario, nobody would actually like him or want to be close to someone like him. But he commands respect because hes strong/smart/capable and proves himself to be so. Its the same reason anyone would like characters like: Madara, Aizen, Thorkell, Kaido, King Bradley, Hisoka, Gilgamesh, Light, Lelouch, Akashi. These are either anti-heros or straight villains. They have terrible traits, usually do the worst kind of shit imaginable and most on the list are FAR worse than Thorgil in terms of damage done to others or being an asshole, and yet people love them. I know yall love Madara but he was planning to literally eradicate the human race while giving them a "final dream" until they starve to death. Lelouch, while being an anti-hero, got hundreds if not thousands of people killed with his schemes and plots and most of the time he doesnt even blink. All these things were done for the "better cause" in their minds but in the end, the result is that they got people killed. But they are respected and loved because they were strong or smart. Basically, being capable in a tv show tends to wash or blindside others to their worse traits. Thorgil's bad traits stand out alot more in Vinland Saga because the shows main theme is that ppl like Thorgil is bad. But we all love Thorkell whos mindset is the same as Thorgil. Fight and die as a warrior. Why is that? Maybe bcause Thorkell acts more childish and has less moments where we see him do bad stuff? Regardless, the point is that as much as some ppl want to deny it, power gains respect. Being capable gains respect. Being absolutely batshit crazy and having a strong conviction commands respect. It dont mean if its right or wrong. Plus its a tv show, if everyone only likes the "good" ppl then theres no such thing as a favorite villain then
Thors died 15 years ago. And 15 years before that he quit fighting. So its been at least 30 years since Thors was a Viking. These soldiers are probably not even 30 years old. So Tors is before their time. They wouldn't know him unless someone told them about him
Being outlawed in a medieval context can be not too different from being executed. Having to move somewhere else means going to a place where you have no rights, nobody trusts you and often there's a language barrier.
22:39 I think Canute was willing to do this initially, before they ran back to the farm. But after they had killed his Kingsguard and fought against him in the battle, they would have been Outlawed.
Names with Thor in them were pretty common, it's also been about 15 years since Thors actually died and around 30 (I think) years since he faked his death. So people like Floki and Thorkell are the only ones who probably still think about Thors.
Canute actually touches his scar when he reminds of Thorfinn because it was him who made that scar, when he realized that Canute killed Askeladd
