I love that the outcome was less about Thorfinn convincing Canute, but more about inspiring Canute. Canute felt like his back was against the wall mentally, and since he really couldn't trust many people, he thought tightening control was the only means to maintain leadership.
Thorfinn gave him an excuse as an out he himself was looking for besides just being corrupted from the mental images of his father. Someone to trust as an ally, not fight against as an enemy.
You're absolutely right that Thorfinn's philosophy couldn't be put into practice by every person (or even in every situation, regardless of the person!).
There is a LOT of oppression in this world, and while nonviolence has a place in fixing that, it would be naive to believe it can resolve every situation.
People like to throw around the nonviolent nature of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr's form of activism as the proper way to seek change while disparaging the more forceful activism of, say, Malcolm X.
What they leave out is that these men both liked and respected each other and, while they didn't always agree with each other's methods, they recognized that neither method alone would bring the changes needed (and that we're indeed still working on now, decades later).
It's also important to recognize that people are really bad about cherry-picking the parts of King's approach that they like and using only those parts to illustrate how both he and other activists should work. It's easy and comfortable to dismiss or denigrate any protest one likes this way.
Instead, it may be wise to sit back and study King's 'Letter from Birmingham Jail' and his other writings (along with those of other activists) to truly get a sense of what's happening and what needs to happen now and in the future.
Be Thorfinn when you can. Be Askeladd when you must.
Sorry, I get to rambling sometimes 😛
The feels I got from this episode were just amazing. Seeing just how much of a positive impact Thorfinn made on everyone he met on the farm from Olmar, Snake, Old Master, Pater and even on Canute, it's no wonder they all think of him as a one of a kind incredible man. The scene of Thorfinn and Einar by Arnheid's grave is one of the best scenes I've ever witnessed in any show given the deep context behind it. Also that special poem at the end of the episode was just beautiful. Perfect way to wrap up the farmland arc for every character we saw in S2.
Thanks for this amazing video, I hope you live a good life.
Don't feel the need to defend yourself against people misinterpreting Thorfinn's Philosophy, "You have no enemies" don't seek to harm people, protecting yourself is fair game though.
With added context in this episode to anyone that would challenge Thorfinn's Philosophy: Firstly AVOID being in situations where you can get taken advantage of or threatened with your life, if that doesn't work then RUN, and if that doesn't work then FIGHT as a last resort.
That's how I interpreted what he said this episode anyway, you had a good take though. 👍😺
not everyone on the farm is a slave.
Pater was the most inspire from thorfim and einar for thst last words inspire to enjoy life
I cried like five times watching this episode, i read the manga but idk, seeing something of this caliber outdo the manga, (which is already amazing, with it’s highly detailed art) left quite a deep impression on me more so than when i read it years ago in my late teens and still figuring out who i am.
Ketil earns everyone's respect by lying that he was a great warrior🤺
And his son earned everyone's respect by lying that he was the one who persuaded the king to withdraw 🏳
This is the love that Canute was talking about.
I haven't checked in on this channel for a while, not only did you improve as an reactor but your english has also become better. props to you🤝🏼
As controversial as it is, I really respect your understanding of ketil. It's a nuanced take that everybody is so quick to overlook so simply. Yes a slave owner is a slave owner. Yes a slave owner who is in love with a slave who is forced to have sex with him is a rapist. And of COURSE you can't just ignore that, and ketil is an absolute piece of garbage, but he was amongst the better side of slave owners in the time period (at least in the story) so many people forget that until the arneid stuff EVERYBODY was like "damn this guy's pretty fuckin dope for a slave-owner!" And honestly….he was. He let thorfinn and Einar buy back their freedom, was friendly to them and didn't beat or harass them, etc. But of course to arnheid he was a complete monster and deserves zero respect.
But yknow, think of it from both aspects still.
13:30 when she said “Jesus!” felt that, he shows why in previous episode, he’s on an entire different level of badass and thorfinn way he is lookin unstoppable
I still can't believe Canute said : lmao I'm gonna leave the farm .
It made me emotional how ONE conversation with another person while the two are completely open to listen to what the other has to say can change so many things T T
I know that this situation is very unlikely but It was so beautiful ❤
I'm surprised people were offended by your take. Every idea must be applied practically. Thorfinn has this ideology because he affords it, I doubt he goes around now telling everyone hey start thinking like me. Or that he'd go to a young lady and tell her hey go jogging in the night and if you get mugged just bow and forgive cuz they're not your enemies. I mean No-Enemy Thorfinn himself wouldn't think like that imho. So I don't even know why there's a conversation in the first place.
Would these people also not choose violence if some thug came to their mother/wife/daughter and harmed them in front of their face? Every idea has different real world applicability people.
This eps is peak❤️
❤❤
Just a random thought that i had which i find politically interesting. If the people of Vinland Saga used the same terms that the conservatives use nowadays against the progressive left, they would probably call Thorfinn "woke" for trying to end wars and slavery.
Thorfinn didn't actually changed Canute mindset instead he understood his plan and offer Canute to help fill gap in his plan. Can't wait for their next interaction!
I just love Thorfinn and Canute character development, they have polar opposite approaches but same goals. I am so ready for next season!!!

You are right, there are lots of people who couldn't live in society with the philosophy like Thorfinn's, but it's only because our world is not Vinland, which Thorfinn wants to find or create himself. So I think that the main idea of not having enemies applies in the first place to the utopian place described in anime, while being in a realistic world you just have to strive to be like our mc.
sth like that 🤷♂
This episode was so masterfully done. I love it. I'm a manga reader (read 200 chapters) and i can say that Mappa took some creative liberties into really carving the story that fits into a cinematic experience.
For example, they removed the part in the manga that shows thorfinn's face all swolen up. It was hilarious to see him talking to Olmar and Snake like that. Maybe they did that because that comedic scene wouldn't fit the dramatic tone of the episode. They also added that scene of thorfinn walking up the mountain. Pater's monlogue was also never part of the manga (but i like it). They also removed some lines in the manga which reveals Ketil missing Arnheid, and the guests complain why they had to work from now on. Thorgil's departure was also not explained. In the manga it was said he left the farm and was never seen again. Over-all despite all these changes and additional scenes, I love the episode. Truely peakland saga. Btw,
Two paths is obviously about Thorfinn's path for creating a peaceful nation, as opposed to Canute's idea of forging a country through wars.
This was a very beautiful episode and I am very happy with the adaptation of the arc as a whole. I think was manga was still a bit superior, because of better dialogue, but it is close. The music and voice acting did a lot to some scenes.
Pre-reaction paragraph lesgooo 🥳
I need my popcorn, i love these.
10 for me, as a manga fan, hopefully we can have more fight scene next season!
Are people out there really trying to excuse Ketil's actions towards Arnheid? What the fuck? Anyways, never apologize for having to expand on your thoughts with this anime – there is a lot to digest and talk about. <3
This episode is a master-piece 😭
14:50 i was hoping you were gonna mention thorfinn copied joseph joestar's secret technique haha (jk)
Thorfinn went FULL JESUS on their asses.
I still think it's hilarious that the "land of milk and honey" talked about in this show is just the Hudson Bay.
