i was on kanute side but thorfin brain washed him so easily now its crazy
thorfinn really ate up 100 punches from a guy that killed a fucking bear
I was lookin forward to this
After thorfinn attacked canute, he was sold into slavery as punishment instead of being killed. So canute was directly responsible for thorfinn becoming a slave, but as a lighter punishment than we would have otherwise gotten.
I stand true to my words and as an honest person other than your great content, you look gorgeous as always 🌌
I love the gummy bear necklace, where'd you get it?
Canute truly wants to build a peaceful paradise. He wants to change the ways of the vikings. It a really violent culture and Canute has embraced the idea that to bring that change he too has to exercise his powers to harm his own subjects(sometimes). He is on his way to consolidate vikings within his own army, perhaps he desires wealth so that he can create a standing army. Vikings within army won't enslave, pillage, or kill people, because they have to obey his commands. Like he did not allow pillaging over Ketil's farm. He wants monopoly over violence, like any modern state with functioning rule of law. If canute can tame and control most violent of humans, rest will be walk in the park for him. Hence the phrase "save the vikings".
Honestly, you pretty much understood everything considering it was your only viewing of the episode. I remember when I first read this part in the manga, I was like, "Wait, what? So Canute can stop tHe tIDe or WHoaT?" 😮😂
Here is my own interpretation of their both philosophies for anyone who's interested (sorry for the lenght).
Two men, one shared utopia, two different paths to achieve it:peace.
Violence for peace (oxymoron) or peace through pacifism. Which is the best path?
Here, Thorfinn shows us that violence can be overcome by pacifism. Unfortunately, very few individuals are capable of repeating such an accomplishment. Solving conflicts without resorting to violence is significantly more challenging. It's undeniably the harder of the two paths, but it's also the most noble. Only true warriors, such as Thorfinn, can take it.
To provide some balance to this, one could argue that pursuing universal peace is already a utopian concept in itself. If, on top of that, we seek to achieve it solely through pacifism, it adds a "utopia to the utopia." Canute's path has the merit of being much more pragmatic.
Anyway both sides have good arguments; it's up to the viewers to choose. What's your choice, guys?
They really toned down thorfinn's messed up face from those punches in the anime, if you can believe it
King Canute pointing at the waves and telling them to stop, just to point out that God is moving them, not him is actually a real, possibly historically accurate story from the 12th century. It's generally understood as a display of humility not frustration though. When the author planned the rough outline for the series he probably knew that this would be a major scene.
It's kind of funny, because it feels like one of the most classically "anime" dramatic scenes.
this was done so well but imo both their messages/gaols were conveyed/ translated more understanbdably in the manga but man, ive watched the hole series multiple times and i still get emotional
There is a reason people call it Peakland
When he says that he will fight god, is by creating a paradise on earth on par with heavens, so that people do not need to endure god's trials. That's canute's goal. He wants to unify the vikings towards the creation of this civilization.
Karlsefni is a nickname like Thorkells nickname was "the tall" but karlsefni doesn't translate as well. Karlsefni would roughly translate to "the makings of a man" or "what men are made of" or something in that direction.
I didn’t know people weren’t aware of it but yeah Canute IS exactly why Thorfinn is a slave at the beginning of the season, for striking Canute at the end of the first season
I guess thorfin disappoint you ,since he didn't fight back
I know it's kinda hard to see where Canute is coming from because he speaks more about values and goals than practical terms of what he's doing this for. If you take the dialogue at face value, you just think he speaks in ideals but when we think of what he does, it's very pragmatic. He's making sure the Vikings as a whole don't act like wild animals, left to their own devices to spread across the world and bring chaos, more violence than ever.
Both sides have their merits, and of course we want Thorfinn's first method to be the solution to everything. This is where we're speaking ideals, more so than what Canute is speaking about. Alas, the real world we know has taught us that first method isn't always what's been known to work.
man i love this show, loved the ending, cant wait!
truly speaking of Canute this real what happened in history of viking tbh
You even got Thorfinn's haircut!
Canute: Yo Thorfinn, watch this! Water Breathing – Eleventh Form: Dead Calm!
Thorfinn: But there's nothing happening…
Canute: That's because Ufotable aren't here!
Thorfinn: What's Ufotable? I'm starting to think much of this is just in your head.
Sweyn: Don't listen to him, son! It's happening, all of this is real, you can do it!
The part about Canute trying to stop the wavs was actually done by the real King Canute, albeit in a different context. But still a little fun fact.
In my opinion "god" talk here is a metaphor. He isn't actually gonna fight god literally with an army. He is creating something that defies God's logic. His army is against the current order of the world created by God. God could be equal to natural order or current structures of civilization.
Peakland saga 🗿
Canute literally says "sorry for making you a slave" and you say "I dont know if he was involved in making him a slave" lol. Yes, he was the one sentencing Thorfinn to a life in slavery. Which was nice of him, because he had every right to just execute him on the spot for attacking him.
The clash between Thorfinn and Canute comes down to how to build a better word, through violence or peace.
honestly so proud of you for not bawling your eyes out fully when he says he has no enemy. My and my friend watched Vinland saga season 1&2 only a few weeks apart after we were sure there'd be enough content to go throught (since it was our picked anime for the watch stuff together night) and when he says it man, everything popped back so hard
him sighing away emotions after the lady from the english village gets taken away
his first time remeeting leif and saying it's never over and Mom&Sis don't matter
His insane displays in France & against Thorkell
His shame and despair realizing what he did but deciding he'll climb out of who he was.
It's so fucking beautiful even rn i can't NOT cry about it !!
Teddy apart from what Thorfinn said about the nonsense of killing and hurting each other, that they don't know each other, that it's better to find a peaceful way to resolve problems, do you think that there are other meanings about "I have no enemies » ?
« People are waiting for me », the people he killed, Leif, Einar, Ylva, Elga, Thors, Askelaad, Arnheid and the people that he wants to save with the Vinland, this sentence is so powerful.
Also Thorfinn said that after 32 punches, the age of Jesus ( beetween 30/33 it’s not specified if I remember correctly) when he died in the cross to forgive the sins of the humans, Thorfinn has also long hair like him after this punch, he is like « sacrificing » himself to forgive his own sins and save all the people in that war. ( just my interpretation )
There's a story called "King Canute and the Tide" about what Canute is doing in this conversation.
Your hair looks amazing 🔥
no canute is the one who directly made thorfinn a slave
Oh teddy youre so cute ❤
The waves scene is basically Canute saying he can’t challenge the natural order of things (which he calls a god, but that’s what he means. Wars, Viking culture and etc), so he’ll at least be in charge of it and direct it to something better than where they are now.
