Vinland Saga season 2 was fecking brilliant. How they got me to bawl my eyes out over a character introduced half way through the season and within 2 episodes of the introduction as well was just insane. Truly a beautiful beautiful story told through the eyes of the main characters personal and emotional growth. The only thing negative about it is that the 2nd to last episode should have been the one then saw out the season, the actual final episode should have been episode 1 of season 3. Also, season 1 was not overrated.
For the mailbag question about anime that have stood the test of time, I think one of my favorite examples is the original Ghost In The Shell movie from the mid 90s. It really embodies the classic dark cyberpunk tone and aesthetic and the plot holds up as well as it ever did, arguably even better because of the increasing relevance of commentary with regard to the effects of technological advancement on human civilization.
I agree with Mits about Einar at the beginning. That scene was not an opportunity for Einar to protect anyone, because he was literally powerless in that situation. He couldn't save his sister by way of sheer willpower and desire to protect; the only thing he could accomplish by attempting to stop what was happening was to get himself killed and leave his sister to be abused even worse by an angry group of vikings. Einar was an unarmed man with no combat experience– it's not like this is DBZ where he could just summon super powers with his rage and take out a group of dangerous combatants.
Edit: I also agree with the point about the silly slapstick humor in the last episode. Honestly the sister character kind of annoyed me because she feels like a totally one-dimensional trope character most of the time and the interactions with her feel really out of place in the show, not just because of the over-the-top violent slapstick stuff, but also in how she just seems to be in a perpetual state of blind rage/stupidity like with the gag about her refusing to even entertain the idea that Thorfinn was actually her brother. It was like they took a character out of Black Clover or Demon Slayer, and shoehorned her into what is otherwise a much more grounded world. She just seemed out of place and I felt like those interactions slightly diminished the payoff of the final episode which felt like it was supposed to emphasize the triumph of his unlikely return to his home and his family after everything he had been through to get back.
