An early adaptation that’s been missing for decades, what evidence suggests it’s even real?

I thought this was about Lupin the VIII… but that technically does exist

[edit]: this whole thing reminds me of the urban legend surrounding the LATAM dub of Urusei Yatsura (which I personally don't think exists), difference is that for Urusei Yatsura, people are adamant on saying they saw it themselves and attributing credits to people without really verifying first. They also asked a VA about it, he said he doesn't remember it, but they somehow inhaled copium so hard they thought he was confirming the dub's existence… it's quite funny.

That's interesting that there supposedly was an early adaptation of Lupin III Part 1. Though, I think I'm in agreement with you, LSSQ. Unless we actually do get more concrete evidence of its existence, I'm just gonna mark it off as not real. Regardless, another great lost media video! 🙂

not at all surprised by the encyclopedia runner's response: Lupin III is weird as hell and so is it's history <3

This reminds me of the rumor that In a episode of exo squad the macross shows up.

8:15 I checked how many pages the 2nd edition of the anime encyclopedia has and it has 876 pages… yeah… that's a lot of time to spend for a book as thick/big as that is. Thankfully the books are less than $12 on eBay for those that are going to buy this edition just to scan them.

I have of Mega Man Zero figure from Ban Bandai from my birthday : but what happened another character from Mega Man Zero never have a figure from 2000s like Ciel, Copy X, Omega and Four Guardians.
Maybe Ban Bandai US have a prototype figure from 2000s : maybe lost or destroyed ?

Now that's a term i haven't heard in a long, long time. A long time…

The first official dub of the Lupin the Third franchise goes to the 1979 Toho dub of the first Lupin anime movie “The Mystery of Mamo” which was previously only available on flights for Japan Airlines at around that time, that dub is an interesting case since it was recorded in Tokyo with English speaking voice actors that were active in that area at that time, the dub would have faded into deep obscurity had it not been for Discotek Media including it on the DVD release of the film, apparently they found the dub on a 2005 Italian DVD of the film, the dub even had name changes such as Daisuke Jigen being named Dan Dunn

Oh, the anime encyclopedia I think I checked that out way back when I was first in college, I blame it for getting me to watch Ranma 1/2. but it was still a cool book.

Been a Lupin fan for 22 years now and never heard of the Viper dub rumor, so this was a treat to watch!

LUPIN LOST MEDIA FUCK YESS

WateredWillow 2023.01.17 - 4:17 am

There is an actual piece of confirmed to be real Lupin the Third lost media. In 1998, there was a 30th Aniversary stage musical called "I'm Lupin" notable for having Dragon Ball Z singer Hironobu Kageyama as the role of Goemon Ishikawa. It was filmed and aired on the TV station "Kids Station" in Japan. Though we have the album for this musical, the filmed performance has yet to show up at all on the internet.

There has to be a treasure trove of lost Lupin III content considering how long it's been around and it's popularity outside Japan, especially in Europe. There's the canceled Lupin VIII series, the potential English dubbed episodes for Part II past the current episode 79 cutoff, potentially lost commercials, etc. I wonder if the Viper could potentially be something that was only brought over to a market like Hawaii or the Philippines. I know a lot of Super Sentai and other shows were only dubbed in English for those areas. I have the English dubbed Bioman series that I believe was only shown in those regions.

Dubs are below subproducts, they shouldn’t even be searched for. A waste of time that takes attention away from media that should indeed be preserved.

The dub is real. My uncle works at anime and he told me so.

Oruguín 2023.01.17 - 7:22 am

¿Remember the "Leo the Lion" dub of the second season of "Kimba the White Lion? The one that YMS talked about and showed on his Kimba vs Lion King masterpiece? I imagine a Lupin III dub like that xD

Unmarketable 2023.01.17 - 7:37 am

I would kill for this if it actually existed

vivisheepy 2023.01.17 - 7:39 am

This most likely does not exist given the lack of evidence, but it definitely feels like something that COULD have existed. There's been lots of obscure/lost Lupin media, especially when it comes to dubs. There was an English dub of the Mystery of Mamo made for Japan Airlines in the 70s which was lost for about 30 years if I remember correctly.

Jispy Moe Dantes 2023.01.17 - 10:54 am

My personal guess is that if "The Viper" exists at all, its not gonna be the original TV series… rather, its either A) gonna be a dub of one of the movies (apparently some of the Lupin movies have dubs made specifically for airline flights) or else B) one of the video games that got localized but somehow went through that whole "removing the references" ordeal.

There is an NES game called Codename Viper, which stars a guy in a green jacket and I've heard plays a lot like Rolling Thunder (which itself is a blatantly Lupin-inspired video game) so that may be what started this whole silly rumor.

DylanYoshi 2023.01.17 - 11:42 am

I'm getting a weird amount of dejavu from this, as though I've heard the name Viper in relation to Lupin before. Maybe it's because of the Part 2 episode where Lupin uses a snake to kill a guy, or maybe I'm conflating it with the video game Fighting Vipers for some reason. Still a weird feeling, though.

Edit: I think I know what I was thinking of. There's a Part 3 character known as Viper the Swindler in certain localizations. If the guy is telling the truth, perhaps they were remembering that a character named Viper was part of an English localization, and ended up conflating it with other info on the Lupin franchise. Might be a bit of a stretch, but it's the best theory I've got.

It could be a lost test market dub, similar to the harmony gold Dragon Ball dub, or the bbc Urusei Yatsura dub?

Jonathon Clements is a cool guy, I'm sure he'd want to help if he could. I don't know him, I just attend the film festival that he directs. I'll give him an email about it 🙂

This seems like such an obvious fake to get on an Iceburg intentionally.

lupin III + “The Viper” + 1972

As one of the replies mentions, no way in heck did a dub come out in one year back in the 70s.

Is a very specific set of details, no creditable sources, no updates, and just generally feels fake.

I really do enjoy your content and analysis into these things, never would have known about this.

You know, I bet Lupin the 3rd would be able to make a successful golden bat crossover 🤔

I remember stumbling across this thread while doing research on Lupin VIII. I wasn’t really convinced on its existence and didn’t look further into the thread but it did end up becoming an inside joke among my friend group.

An example of something that might count as Lupin iii lost media is the alternate endings for the ova return of Pycal.
I wouldn’t call them truly lost since they are available on the discotek release it’s just because they aren’t online and aren’t on any piracy sites since no one really cares about return of Pycal that much to upload the alternate endings.

Sissyphus Bk201 2023.01.18 - 12:06 am

I remember the watching the described "ep29" as a kid, then got older, saw people saying it didn't exist, figured id wait a while until people found it, then creator uploaded some eps, so people started saying its not real?
Always thought it was a really weird thing.

tyvm for the cool video man!
it was great.

It a reference to the harmony gold test dub

Matthew Brenner 2023.01.18 - 12:49 am

Honestly getting hold of the Discotek guys aren't that hard. If they'll answer your question or if they know the answer is a different story though. You could find them at a convention, ask the question during their next twitch stream, or talk to them on twitter as I do every so often. That aside, if it was a US release chances are it would be known. However there are a lot of Filipino dubs in English that go missing because they weren't licensed for home release. There are also a few rare things that get dubbed for britain or Australia in the pre-80s that go pretty well missing.

Sgt. Bilby 2023.01.18 - 1:52 am

Hi, I'm the "sgtbilby" from the Lost Media Archive forums
I was being logical on why i feel this "Viper" dub of Lupin the 3rd Part 1 is not possible or practical
I appreciate you highlight my reasons (tho only highlight points 1 and 5) but if you read ALL my points [all of which are logically sound, i might add (not to beat on my drum 'ere)]

Also, If they did make a dub of Part 1 back in 1972, It would likely be scrapped upon development like planned dub for Tomorrow's Joe ("Rocky Joe") – and i mean that in a hypothetical sense

starshkr46 2023.01.18 - 6:23 am

TMS seems to be pretty active in reaching to a worldwide community. They have several youtube channels uploading official content (as in whole anime shows) in several languages. You might be in luck in being able to contact them, actually.

I just got in contact with an actor that worked on Albert & Sydney. She confirmed that she did work on the series. but when I asked about her having a copy she has yet to respond
