For me it seems like canute was kinda scary of thorfin , he tried to convinced him telling him about his dreams and goals but he wasn't sure if thorfin would understand that , he was like "please understand me ,I don't wanna kill you "
I can't say for sure but I think thorfinn having long hair and canute having short hair as opposed to their last meeting symbolizes the inversion of their personality and beliefs.
