The disappearance of the Roanoke Colony remains one of America’s oldest unsolved mysteries. Established in 1587 on Roanoke Island, off present-day North Carolina, the colony was intended to be the first permanent English settlement in the New World. Led by Governor John White, who returned to England for supplies, the settlers faced challenges from harsh conditions and hostile relations with local tribes. When White returned in 1590, he found the colony deserted with no trace of the 115 colonists, including his granddaughter, Virginia Dare, the first English child born in America. The only clue was the word “CROATOAN” carved into a post, leading to theories ranging from assimilation with local tribes to mysterious disappearances.
