For any wondering the audio from the mic is fed back into his ear, and when there is a delay on this feedback your brain does some weird thing where you try to slow down your voice to allow the voice you are hearing to catch up. It's inadvertent and I'm not sure if anyone can ignore it. If you want to experience this yourself call someone you are with and put your phone and theirs to each of your ears and try to maintain a normal paced conversation.
