For anyone curious, Thorfinn's experience was entirely his subconscious, he does not have the ability to contact the dead.

He saw his subconscious' interpretation of Askeladd, Thors, and the violence he lived through for 11 years.

Also, notice Thors was also surrounded by the corpses of the people HE killed, but unlike Thorfinn, he's not dragged down by them because he's achieved the inner peace Thorfinn Lacked.

Adrian Wagner 2023.03.08 - 2:05 am

First, Thorfinn meets his father in what seems to be a heavenly paradise and then his second father in the deepest corners of the earth reminiscent of hell. But instead of representing the bad side of Thorfinn, Askellad is the one that helps him get out of that pit and confront his fears. This show is art. Pure and simple.

Askeladd doesn't view himself as a True Warrior. He wants Thorfinn to follow in his father's footsteps, someone Askeladd saw as a True Warrior. And like Thors said earlier in Season 1, a True Warrior doesn't need a sword.

This is what makes the series interesting, following a pacifist in a world of violence near the end of the Viking Era.

It feels so surreal seeing the man who Thorfinn hated most of his life being the one to give him some positive motivation in a dream. Thorfinn really has moved on from his grudge.

Kokuutou92 2023.03.08 - 2:20 am

I was close to tearing up when Thorfinn started crying and apologizing to all the souls. I love, absolutely love how Thorfinn (or his VA) said "tatakae" when he swore off violence. He's the polar opposite of Eren but I also love Eren's "tatakae"

PetarBlade Štrok 2023.03.08 - 2:20 am

One of the best episodes I have ever watched. I was crying throughout the whole episode. Beautiful stuff man…

Ash 2023.03.08 - 2:27 am

Think of Thors as the ideal. Even if Thors swore off violence, he still had situations where he had to fight

whimsofmim 2023.03.08 - 2:29 am

Loved this episode. Cried when Thorfinn finally started to CLIMB! Seeing both dad and Askedadd was awesome. I liked that they each imparted their own version of the same wisdom to Thorfinn and set him on the right path. I love Thorfinn and Einar's friendship and that Thorfinn knows what he wants now. It's amazing how satisfying that final scene of him farming was.

LuffyToons 2023.03.08 - 2:35 am

I absolutely love the direction this story is going. A lot of people are probably gonna drop this after hearing Thorfinn saying he's swearing off violence, but this is probably the best character development i've ever seen. Thorfinn is going to become a true warrior

14:05 this scene was amazing, MAPPA definitely understood the assignment

For those who are interested in reading along with the manga, this episode adapted the entirety of chapters 70 to 71.
(also the manga has slightly better written dialogue, but that’s completely understandable since the people who write/translate the subtitles only have a limited amount of time before the simulcast goes up, so they have less time to dedicate/worry about the quality of their prose)

One really important bit of imagery/symbolism in this episode was how not just Thorfinn was being weighed down by the dead but Thors as well. But unlike Thorfinn, Thors wasn’t pulled down to “where everyone is your enemy”, because he’s already gone on his journey of rebirth and being a “true warrior” so he’s learned how to climb back up to the top while bearing the weight of the dead (i.e. all the people Thors killed in his past).

Also for anyone worried that the series is going to have zero conflict (or even zero action), recall how even Thors (who had already become and been a “true warrior” for a while) was still forced into situations that requires Thors to use martial prowess to defend himself (and others), but without taking a life. Recall Thors “a true warrior needs no sword” line as well, that should give watchers a good indication of how Thorfinn is going to learn how to deal with violence that insists on finding him. While the series is never going to be like season 1 again in terms of action and content, there is still plenty of conflict and martial engagements to be had in new ways in the future narrative.

so a little clarification on the Valhalla stuff. Valhalla is not like the christen heaven. it is a place where warriors who have died in battle fight forever in the after life. they fight and are killed over and over again, and in some myths then go to Odin's hall to feast and drink. the process then starts all over again the next day. so while its taking liberties with the blood pit of fighting it could be seen as a version of Valhalla. Norse mythology is definitely brutal, even the afterlife.

10/10 Episode!!!

What a weekend MAPPA has had with this and AOT. Kinda crazy that we go from a world ending event of genocide in AOT to a man renouncing violence in Vinland Saga.

Julian Sanchez Harris 2023.03.08 - 8:16 am

Askeladd was on that roman pillar because he; 1. despised the violent ways of vikings. 2. Always had a greater purpose than just killing. 3. Was a decendant of Lucious Artorious (King Arthur), sharing his name, someone he deemed better than the vile ways of norsemen and anglosaxians.
Aka, not because he himself deems himself to be a "true warrior" (Thor is the true warrior), but the reason for him still being "human" and sitting above the battlefield is rather symbolical.

Now it's time to liven the mood! The pork chop scene is coming!

Michael Blackwood 2023.03.08 - 3:46 pm

Keep in mind those are farmhands einar was fighting so they didn’t have actual training but it’s still 4 of em so Einar is really that guy

Michael Blackwood 2023.03.08 - 3:48 pm

Also vallaha is for the Vikings but it’s a place you go after dying in battle so maybe thorfinns dreaming about a place that’s really far away. Maybe the place that’s in the title 🤔 lmaoo

vzgamer 2023.03.09 - 12:22 am

They are in denial that Thorfinn is peaceful now…

While twisted and nightmarish, because of Thorfinn’s trauma and experiences, his dream isn’t too far removed from Valhalla as one would think.

Only warriors went to Valhalla, and in addition to feasting and drinking eternally, the same was said for battle. They revered the glory of battle in those days (we think), so to fight every night and be ressurrected the next morning was an awesome boon. That’s why these warriors are laughing, they absolutely love it.

Onyx 2023.03.09 - 6:41 pm

8:58 That's EXACTLY where you go to if you're on the path to Valhalla. Making killing for the sake of killing the goal of your life. Plundering, murdering, raping. Despising peace and the value of life. Embracing the horrors of war.
Why would a life like that lead you to a sunny, beautiful, peaceful meadow, united with your innocence (symbolized by the lamb)?

You asked why they're laughing – they're laughing because that is the twisted salvation that Valhalla promises. Being in hell and revelling in it.
For someone like Thorkell, what Thorfinn saw down there would be heaven.
The meadow with the lamb would be hell for him. Because he's a warrior, and Valhalla is for warriors.

Onyx 2023.03.09 - 10:44 pm

Askellad wasn't a true warrior, that's why he hated himself. He was a warrior who understood what a true warrior is, but couldn't achieve it – and instead plead his life to PAVING THE WAY for Thorfinn and Canute to become true warriors.

And the goal really is the renunciation of violence, even if it is for the protection of loved ones.
Remember Thors? He tried to protect the young men of his village, plus his own son – yet he didn't kill a single one of Askellad's men, or Askellad.
Instead, he sacrificed his own life.

This can be connected to the moment Thorfinn was trying to protect Einar, when he asked Ketil's son to just cut him down instead of Einar.
Even though he could have whooped all of their asses unarmed. The essence is to lose the fear of death and loss, and also the notion that you're more righteous or worth more than others, that there is an evil in others that is not also in you. In other words, forgiveness.
This is also the meaning of Jesus "dying for the sins of humanity", binding into the christianity theme.
Thorfinn was a murdering, plundering viking his whole life. As he said – if THEY deserve death, then he deserves death a thousand times over.
It would not be righteous to kill others for their evil deeds, while allowing himself to live.
"Let him who is without sin cast the first stone."

It can also be connected to the scene in season 1, when Ragnar (Canute's coneheaded fill-in dad) allowed Askellad to kill an entire village to save Canute.
The priest pointed out that this is not love, but discrimination.

Being a true warrior means embodying selfless love.

I think the thing he forgot was when his dad said "Nobody is your enemy."
