Why the Mythosaur is SO Important to The Mandalorian

by MOEPP

We’ve now seen our first live action mythosaur! Even in Star Wars Legends mythosaurs were rarely pictured and only ever discussed. Here is their history in both canon and Legends, and what they mean mythologically and thematically for the future of the series!

I think an interesting thing about the Darksaber and how Din is the one who seems to struggle the most with it is that it may be much more symbolic than we realize; the Darksaber is a symbol of leadership for the Mandalore, and the weight of it may be just as asymbolic. A character that can wield the Darksaber with ease is likely not going to bear the full burden of leadership, while Din struggles because he would. A great leader would not carelessly wield power, and a weapon that is difficult to use makes one less willing to draw it.

Maybe Grogu will calm and ride the Mthosaur. Then Dyn and Bo are Herald's and oversee Mandalore until the new Mand'lore comes of age.

I want boba to make an off hand comment about how he was in the running for leader at one point. Be a fun legend's nod

Thanks Alex. I love your reading via Campbell. In that vein, I see a couple of parallelisms.

Firstly, the Armorer's new recruit is initiated in a body of water that contains a monster; then Din is 'redeemed' (according to the Armorer's tenet) in a body of water that contains a 'monster'. The Armorer isn't merely keeping a tradition but keeping a warped myth of a tradition (which I would argue warps the tradition), while Din is discovering the truth within the myth upon which the tradition is built (without which it becomes 'fundamentalist' dogma). He represets the redemption not of himself for some personal transgression but The Children (and their inferred lineage) for their collective transgression. Whether or not the Armorer accepts Din (and the actual redemption he represents) will be an inflection-point for both Din (and the audience) and The Children.

Secondly, Grogu encounters the Purrgil; then Bo-katan encounters the Mythosaur. (It remains to be seen whether Din encountered the Mythosaur, even though it seems likely he was dragged-under by it — although, if so, why only drag him down and leave him under? — and therefore very definitely had an encounter with it!) The Purrgil are not monsters but 'semi-sentient' ancient aliens who play a mysterious and mythological role in SW lore. Likewise, Mythosaurs, which certainly play a mysterious and mythological role in SW lore, could be more than mere monsters.

I am so encouraged that Favreau-Feloni are very firmly in the Lucas tradition of myth-making, and I love that there are SW fans who continue to parse SW 'content' mythologically (for all that industry- and current socio-cultural-analysis have their place). As far as I'm concerned, this is the way ; )

Y’all may hate me for this but I’m shipping them. They can rule together.

Tina McLaughlin 2023.03.11 - 10:57 am

Seeing the Mandalore is exciting for the story! Hope is there, legends are REAL! Time to tame a ride on the future!

Ashley Gris 2023.03.11 - 11:01 am

THIS is why I always skip the recap. The recap always spoils big reveals

JamesTKirk916 2023.03.11 - 11:36 am

For a while I was hoping that the return of the mythosaur meant the return of Boba Fett but this is cool too

Henrique Abreu 2023.03.11 - 11:58 am

Maybe they'll find love in one another and rule together! Maybe both will ride/tame the Mythosaur. I remember Bo-Katan saying she wanted to be good at something other than war, so the love between them might just happen!

Ander Salvador 2023.03.11 - 1:41 pm

The cliff hunger is WHO will tame the mythosaur? WHO will be the next Mandalor? Din Djarin or Bo-Katan?. I think the dark saber can be owned by Din Djarin and on the other hand Bo-Katan can tame the mythosaur and rule Mandalor. If Din Djarin was the new Mandalor, he would have to stay in the planet ruling it and not going to adventures with Grogu.

Scepticisme Scientifique 2023.03.11 - 3:00 pm

A lost mine with a monster in it? It's more a Balrog than an dragon. 😏

Andy D 2023.03.11 - 4:00 pm

I'm leaning towards Din rising up to lead his people and Bo becoming his right hand…for a while anyway.

Pretty sure Bo will teach Din how to wield the Dark Saber and together they'll tame the Mythosaur. Symbols in hand they will then unite their people and take on whatever big bad ends up being the main antagonist. Smart money is on Thrawn.

Keep in mind this will probably happen over a couple seasons worth of content and encompass other shows like Ahsoka.

irahzi 2023.03.11 - 4:38 pm

Hope they kill off din and grogu in the end.

Bret Pagni 2023.03.11 - 4:55 pm

Thank you for this video.

Ameleii Zane 2023.03.11 - 5:34 pm

My question is why did it take Din to go? They didn't think it was a good idea to go see for themselves? They could have brought the planet back to life a long time ago if they would all work together. I think Baby Yoda will tame that Mythosaur creature I think he will be the new Mando-Jedi and he will be their new leader.

Iiosomnia 2023.03.11 - 9:02 pm

its grogu who will tame mythosaur dan wield darksaber

J F 2023.03.11 - 9:06 pm

Mandalore was Valyrian.. confirmed

Darth Vader 2023.03.11 - 9:18 pm

I think Boba will tame it and then take the Darksaber to lead the Mandalorians and Mandalore into a new golden age like in Legends as Jango would have wanted

Fury Dragon 2023.03.11 - 10:56 pm

Bo-Katan was always more lieutant than empress, she is not exactly the best person to rule, althought Din Djarin is actually even worse, his inability to correctly wield darksaber come from his internal strife, he try to reach familiar things, the way, his cult, but only when he realise that this only hold him back, he can develop more, he don't show us any exceptional leading skills, but perhaps they are somewhere within him, well, we will eventually find out.

Ricktacular James 2023.03.12 - 12:30 am

I bet it's going to be Grogu. I believe the name of the show. "The Mandolorian" is referring to Grogu. Not Din.

ThyAiim 2023.03.12 - 1:30 am

Thought this was Cthulhu at first 😅

Benjamin Meyer 2023.03.12 - 7:26 am

Magic sword is to dark Sabre as glowy energetic pixy dust pointy thing is to light sabre

TheGeneral 2023.03.12 - 1:24 pm

Din is going to unite the Mandalorians with the dark saber and mythosaur but he will let Bo Katan rule because he doesn't want it. His calling is space adventures with Grogu with Grogu eventually becoming the owner of the dark saber , idk where I'm going with this lol

SadJBomb 2023.03.12 - 1:27 pm

i think grogu will tame the mythosaur because he's shown having a connection to animals multiple times and it will also give him a purpose besides merchandising

Annoyed review 2023.03.12 - 2:46 pm

Didn’t they hunt them to extinction so they had to build robot versions….. how is this thing around

AlTerra Lambda 2023.03.12 - 5:43 pm

The appearence of the Mythosaur in the episode was the biggest nerdgasm that i've done

EpicMuttonChops 2023.03.12 - 8:46 pm

i think the plaque Bo read was placed there many many years after Mandalor the Great tamed it, and after the legend had been turned into not-as-true. also i really hope this mythosaur is THE mythosaur

XxCaptainObvios 2023.03.12 - 9:18 pm

Happy that the story is focusing away from baby yoga. They lost me when he pulled Anakin like feats in Boba Fett. More on mando and less on baby yoda and bad cameos and the show will win me back

LycaonWOLFIE 2023.03.12 - 10:40 pm

I bet this is the same mythosaur the first mandalore tamed
