AHHHH this episode had me so stressed and nervous and on edge! Arnheid finally made her decision of what she wants to do concerning Gardar. With the help of Einar and Thofrinn they formed a plan and she set out to escape with Gardar. And I was holding my breath the entire time. I’m worried for Einar and Gardar and Arheid but most of all I’m worried for Thofrinn. I don’t know how to feel about this path he has chosen to take but I can’t deny I was super hyped seeing him take that stance once again, but this time to protect. Hope you enjoy!

True worrier don’t need a sword.
In this situation, He came to embody his father’s words by chance.
Snake is about to see what a true warrior really is
Arnheid does recognize Gardar as her husband. In the manga she mentions that she feels bad for trying to abandon him and that he was only doing all this for the sake of her and Hjalti
Once again, Arnheid's VA is superb. I can't express how well she's done and elevated Arnheid's scenes from the manga. Also, seeing Thorfinn in his trademark fighting stance gave me goosebumps all over.
We all liked edgy young Thorfinn fighting, but he did more bad than good. We all loved minecraft Thorfinn for how he evolved and how well he was written, but his philosophy had great flaws considering the world and age he's from… So now we'll get GOAT Thorfinn who has the best from both.
100 HAYPE
I read the manga, the sequel is incredible, prepare for war
LoL Snake?! Backstory?! Please!! Girl we all know Snake is your Zaddy, but calm down. Askeladd is Thorfinn father when it come to survival/combat. He knows he can't hold back going against Snake. That why he subconsciously summon Askeladd. In this moment he needed blunt honesty.
The ghost of Askeladd is pushing Thorfinn making a decision, not to use violence, and he is doing that in a perfect Askeladd's way: Making sarcastic but profoundly true comments. Here Askeladd is the image of Thorfinn's internal struggle, the image of the man who caused him to become a murdering machine, who also was the same man who tried to teach him something of high value, like that someone, not a hero or a god, has to do something to make things happen. And this is the big problem of Thorfinn: He has to do something, but is violence the right choice in this case? Or, is it the easiest? And, in any case, is using violence to serve Justice a good idea? What if the adversary is also thinking he is serving Justice?
It is interesting how similar but, at the same time, different the representation of Canute's internal struggle is. Both are representations of father figures they hated when they were younger. Moreover, both Askeladd's ghost and the cursed head of king Sweyn are sarcastically alluding to the fact that the young men are betraying their own values. But the cursed head is clearly proud of the cold and cruel ruler Canute is becoming, allowing the young king to have some solace by sharing his paranoia with "someone". Instead, the ghost is making Thorfinn really uncomfortable about his decisions, in part by making the young man not forgetting what is his real goal: Becoming a True Warrior.
These differences reflect how the two young men are facing their struggles. Canute is now accepting the fact that he is becoming like his father, thinking that's inevitable to make his Utopia real. Thorfinn, instead, does not what to suffer the same fate of Askeladd, betraying his ideals of peace with a life of violence. And this is quite relevant for the story, also because Canute is coming.
This entire episode was just beautiful. Seeing Arnheid cry like that on why she did what she did, Einar risking his life for Arnheid so that she can have a better future, Thorfinn helping Arnheid to give her another chance of a peaceful life away from life of violence, Snake being the smart 150+ guy as always, the old master's words of wisdom and also wanting to help Arnheid, seeing our best man Askeladd again, Thorfinn finally fighting for the sake of helping someone in need and of course the smooth and stunning fight between Snake and Thorfinn. Words can't describe how incredible this whole episode was!
I can tell how much Thorfinn is struggling to never revert to his old ways of living . It pains him to even punch someone , any form of violence, makes Thorfinn feel incredibly guilty. It's definitely a difficult fight to battle with . The true battle and true Oath to never hurt anyone or never commit violence. Thorfinn is going through what his father, Thors, was struggling with. Since both dislike violence and war. I'm still reading the Manga of Vinland Saga btw, so idk if Thorfinn will be successful in his hopeful Oath to never harm anyone. I hope Thorfinn never has to go back to violence. Thorfinn already has so many internal demons he's fighting. He clearly doesn't want to be a violent or cruel person. He wants to be a kinder more gentler person. Question is, how will he accomplish it?
Seeing Snake's sword which is a scimitar, I assume he must be arabic. I Would love to know his backstory (never read the manga).
Idk how the Manga of Vinland Saga will end, but I do believe in Thorfinn to become a better man. He's trying so hard to be a better person and kinder one at that. He's trying to become a true warrior who is not violent and doesn't rely on wepons of any kind. I also feel conflicted as Thorfinn and you do , to either to use you're fists to protect yourself & others or to not to . What I'm trying to say, is , you're not the only one feeling conflicted about everything happening in each episode. The world in alot of ways , tries to drag you into violence, even when you want no part of it. The world is cruel and at times forces you into violence. Not saying violence is justifiable. And I'm not condoning it. I'm just saying it's definitely complicated and morally grey for sure.
You should watch hells paradise
Like you said violence of any kind is violence regardless of what that reason may be for it. Dosen't make it right. And I just feel the pain and weight Thorfinn has on his shoulders . He's definitely in a difficult position. And Hopefully if we get a season 3&4 you'll see Thorfinn be tested even futher on his oath to swear off violence and to never hurt anyone again. He's still a changed man and he's trying to be on a better path. Even when you read the Manga of Vinland Saga, you can see Thorfinn has a big heart . Yes it sounds chessy but it's true though. And Thorfinn's nightmares never really stop btw. Even after the second season, he's still haunted by the people he's killed. He's still trying to push forward by carrying the lives he's taken on his back to give them a place to rest in peace by trying to do more good than the damage he's already caused to countless lives.
I think Askeladd , yes I'm calling Askeladd his second father. Thorfinn's second father , is a bit more pessimistic and a realistist? Idk if that's the right word to describe Askeladd. But Askeladd is definitely a complicated human and man for sure. I wouldn't say he's the greatest person, he's definitely flawed and morally grey to say the least. However, he is not evil. I guess I'm saying this , because I don't think Askeladd is trying to push Thorfinn towards violence again, if anything I think Askeladd wanted Thorfinn to be a better person than he could ever be. Like Thorfinn he let vengeance consume him and he became the very person he hated as a result. Askeladd didn't like his father nor vikings, yet he unfortunately dragged himself into that life , due to survival or circumstances. Could be both. Not saying this is okay, just saying Askeladd is a product of his environment and circumstances. Unlike Askeladd, Thorfinn is still alive . Thorfinn is given an opportunity to start again. To rise above and be better. Askeladd unfortunately died , without that opportunity to change . Askeladd, like Thorfinn hates himself. They both hate themselves for what they have done and for who they have became in the past. However ,Thorfinn is a different man than the young angry / resentful teenage boy he was in the past.
Btw To clarify, I'm not a fan of using the words good or evil to describe a person or character. I'm trying to use the words flawed individual instead to describe someone , who has done arguably terrible things , but aren't inherently or intentionally malice or cruel. Idk if this makes any sense.
Most people are morally grey. There's definitely people out there in our world who are inherently cruel and harmful to others , but that's definitely not the majority . The majority is at worst not understanding or educated about others. Thus the majority is at risk of becoming hateful or bigatoted. Or worse become violent towards others that are different from them. The majority also at worse becomes in way emotionless towards others suffering. They think why should I care , because they believe it dosen't effect them. Thus the bystander effect comes into play. At the end of the day when someone is suffering it's all of our problems, because we are suppose to be in this together, fighting for eachother. We are suppose to uplift everyone's voices .So that we can all have freedom , equality , equal rights for all and most importantly peace free from violence and war.
Thorfinn would fight if it was to protect others, just like his father.
Thor's died because there was no other choice, but just after he fought Askelad's warriors and Askeladd himself, I think on this time and age violence includes murder and cruelty, protect someone means sometimes you have to harm someone else instead, but the compromise of Thorfin in order to become a warrior is to protect what he wants to treasure, a good cause, a good friend, a dream, I love this season and his evolution.
I feel like Askellad saying, “still think you can beat him while your half-asleep?”
Is referring to Thorfinn not fighting with killing-intent, which he’s always done before so it must be weird for him. But i think he’ll just fight to subdue Snake or last case, knock him unconscious🙂
So, 2 things about this episode:
1. The reason Snake dismounted and ran was so Thorfinn and Arnheid couldn't hear hum coming, preventing them from hurrying up more and getting away.
2. Snake's sword hints that he either served in the Byzantine Empire, the Middle East, or Spain. Since the manga never specified it, any of the three are likely choices, since Vikings served and traveled in all 3 destinations.
yeahh…i mean thorfinn basically very strong person in vinland saga…snake is like his partner training…
incredible ep
I'm back. This arc is so great. The new opening is still a masterpiece.
The plot is legendary, and the characters are too. Arneid went from just your typical background waifu character, too a hella interesting character.
There also begs the question, how the heck will this be resolved. Also, im suprised there qas no hiatus, there normally is for seasons this long, good thing there wasnt❤
So nice to see Askeladd be a mentor to our boy once again, since it's truly a difficult decision for him, and as Askeladd said, he has no time to think it through.
I also loved the response the old master had to Snake "then throw away your sword". A powerful lesson that might have fallen on semi-deaf ears.
And thank you Einar for being a healthy representation of someone in love. He loves her but knows she's happy with her husband, so he tries to help as much as he can. Absolute unit of a man. Reminds me of Rebecca from Cyberpunk Edgerunners in this regard.
Thorfinn going from Fury Warrior to Windwalker Monk
Snake's sword looks similar to a scimitar, which means he could be from the Middle East
It was the shortest 20 mins of my life.
Arnheid's name is a tricky thing. I've always said the "heid" portion of her name like hide. This isn't technically all the way correct though because her name uses a letter that hasn't been used in Germanic languages since the transition away from Old Norse. In Old Norse there are two different runes that make a "th" sound, Thorn(þ) and Eth(ð). Thorn sounds like the "th" in thin and Eth sounds more like the "th" in there. Say them a couple of times and you'll figure out the difference. Arnheid's name actually ends in a Eth if I'm not mistaken, so it actually ends in this sort of shortened th sound that is somewhat similar to a d.
That being said, I'm sure nobody will blame you for not using a letter that is no longer used from a family of languages that are hundreds of years old. 😅
Askeladd represents Thorfinn's "logical thinking/realism" to his growth as a character, because he wants to be a pacifist, but just as Askeladd told him climb with his victims… now he's the voice that pushes him forward.
We were all wondering about Thorfinn going forward and the author remains realistic… while making it complex, because you can't blame Snake. He remains clear minded, despite his rage and that's cool to see in his character (consistency).
I don't want him to fight, but in order for the dream that the place Vinland represents… he has to be able to save/free people like Arnheid & Gardar.
Just watched the whole ep, this is such a complicated situation. On one hand, one dude wants to avenge his fallen comrads, on the other, we want freedom. I mean these guys aren't exactly people we have emotional investments in, but Snake is… This situation is so complicated TT
OtakuMai, let me join you and say, AHHHHHHH as well! 🤣OMG, this episode was beautiful! Thorfinn isn't taking steps toward violence. He's becoming a True Warrior…😁And I have high hopes for all the other characters involved…🙂
