Trigun Stampede: A new (CGI) classic in the making? (review/analysis)

by MOEPP

Trigun Stampede is the new CGI retelling of the classic Trigun of 1998. In this analysis/review, I compare the two shows to find out if this winter anime 2023 by studio Orange is a new cgi anime masterpiece or a bad version of the classic Trigun.

Didn't watch the new show yet.

but these new facial expressions give so much of this popular tiktok/Disney kind of vibe, where crazy chicks with big eyes trying to look overly emotional and shit.
for me it's a bad thing, don't feel that heavy oldschool steampunk aura anymore, but gotta see how it goes.

it's probably my favourite franchise, after all.

I have no name. 2023.03.12 - 4:02 pm

Honestly I’m just glad to get any trigun content at all. It’s been years since the movie and I don’t mind at all that their is different ways to enjoy Trigun, it adds more content so to speak. Btw very good video, jolly good show!

I like Stampedes animation, the OST, Knives, Zazie and Wolfwood. Everything else is not really my cup of tea. I hate Milly’s replacement. I dislike that Meryl is just a more or less useless newbie, reduced to a point-of-view-character. I dislike that Vash is just a depressed little Kid. All in all, I don't care much for Stampedes characters, whereas I like the characters of the 98 anime and the manga.
In my opinion, things are moving too fast. Seems to me, they crammed as much as possible in 12 episodes. Another thing I dislike. I guess it's because Stampede wants to tell the complete Story of Vash and Knives and ends with the final battle at the end of Trigun Maximum.
I prefer Meryl and Milly as team of qualified professionals, a grown-up Vash and Wolfwood as Vashs partner instead of Vash’s babysitter. From my point of view, Trigun Stampede is mediocre. I watch it, but I don’t really like it. I prefer the manga and the 98 anime. I think Stampede should get a second season, because there are some interesting storylines in the manga, but I don't expect another season.

Btw, your pronunciation is really good, suitable for English Listening Comprehension 👍 .

I’ve gave it a chance, and I hate it. The character redesigns are bad, the new characters are just kinda boring, they don’t capture any of the source materials personality whatsoever. The fights aren’t very compelling, the animation is horrible imo, it looks like it runs at 16 frames per second, and I honestly just don’t like the artstyle chosen. The aesthetics hurt my eyes. It’s such a waste of potential, and it kills my soul that I’m never gonna see the manga animated in it’s entirety in the style of bad lands rumble.
If Stampede was an original work, it would maybe scratch a 4/10, but as a ‘retelling’ of a beloved IP it scores a 0.

"Personality is the same" (referring to Vash)
Say WHAAA?? He's an entierly different man here, from his full inability to use his gun and other powers, or just plain fast reflexes and twitchy random acrobatics like the original (negating bulltes, kicking missiles, running on walls), to his character that's now full of angst, quiet and seemingly deep in thought all the time. Same for Wolfwood. The two (also Millie and Meryl) where LOUD, witty and trashtalky, now they're just quiet and sad.

Roberto is actually a reworked character from the original. There's a scene in the original either manga or anime where Meryl remembers getting her gun. It's different than Stampede though, obviously. If you look at a few of the other characters, Zazie the beast is particularly interesting in this. It looks like Nightow took all three iterations of the beast from the manga and anime and combined them into one. The adult female looking one, the male child one, and the female child one. Brad is another character that comes to mind that Nightow took multiple characters and combined into one. He took the Brad that died in the middle part of the original anime and the Brad from the project seeds flashback and made them into one in Stampede. I'm sure there's at least one or two more examples that I missed too.

As for characterization, a lot of the characters just seem more green behind the years. Which makes sense given this takes place before Vash's arguably most traumatic event; July. As you pointed it out it looks like it's about to happen. I surmise that this will turn Vash more into the character we know by the first episode of the original anime. Like you pointed out, he doesn't have his signature .45 either, and I think that will come after July.

I get the feeling that Nightow is planning a rug pull of sorts where after the beginning, the characters will become more like their older counterparts, and that everything so far is simply set up to give the characters more development.

Knowing anime watchers, I might be stepping on a land mine here, but I think this is a perspective worth considering. Stampede was my first introduction to trigun, and I thought it was incredible. The story was captivating. The characters were all interesting in their own ways. The topics were deeply thought-provoking. I went back and watched the og trigun and found it equally entertaining, but in a different way. The og and stampede are very different from each other, but I don't think this is a bad thing. I believe Stampede is maybe geared to a newer audience. Take Meryl, for example. She still has the same ambitious, fearless, caring attitude, but they added a level of naivety because she is experiencing the realities of the world for the first time. This is more relatable for high school college-aged viewers who don't have the same nostalgia glasses as og trigun fans, and are going through similar experiences themselves. The sadder Vash is also interesting, but I dont think so different take on the character. In the og anime, Vash often showed vulnerability and sadness, and they even mentioned him having an empty smile, which hid his sadness. Stanpede just took this concept and ran with it. It took a more realistic outlook on how someone would react to the grief and guilt that Vash has. This wasn't necessarily better or worse than in the og. Both have their merits it was just different. Which sums up the two shows for me, they are both incredible in their own ways and deserve much praise.

First season was actually really damn good. The 3D being this good, is not something that I have seen yet in anime. All future 3D anime shows and movies need to be at least in this level.
Story was intriguing and the action was great! I would rate this season a

Mmmm, I'd say both anime are on par for me, and I prefer manga the most. I have a bunch of questions to the old adaptation too and the fact that fans close their eyes at its obvious downsides, just because it's nostalgic, is not fair in my opinion. But the new adaptation is an unfinished story and if they make it fine in the second season and, maybe, recreate some best scenes from the manga there… oh I can't say what I'd prefer more. Graphic is what pulls me too, it felt cinematographic even, not anime, and I'm happy that Orange's progress that much, every year thay do better and better.

Honestly comparing the two shows for me is like asking whether I prefer pizza or ice cream. I love them both, for different reasons.

I own 3 different versions of the original series and the manga…its one of my favorite animes BUT I think I like this new one alot better , it's closer to the manga and has more depth plus Millions Knives isn't generic like in the 98 series.
I'm going to rematch the new series starting tonight.

Advi Singass 2023.04.14 - 11:51 pm

one would think they would have adapted the stuff from Trigun Maximum that the first anime didnt cover,
Making Stampede a prequel yet separate from the other adaptations was a strange choice but its good overall
Showing us the backstory & revealing Vashes metal arm off the bat robs new viewers of good reveals
Knives in this one though, that boy is muah just a great villain straight up

Seq 00042 2023.04.24 - 1:11 pm

youre not a trigun fan. thats not even the same character… they might as well just make a new anime. it tries to get you with corporate pretty animation. its 6,000,000$$ not 60,000,000$$. I laugh and cry at the OT. this new one is gay. the new trigun is background noise. story telling suck balls. its more of a gore flick like the direction was a bad resident evil movie. i hope they dont remake Cowboy Bebop. you cant remake an awesome anime. name one? name an awesome anime remake where they change the soul of the anime. it wasnt funny and it doesnt get your imagination. this was just a sell to trigun fans and try to make it different. Hellsing Ultimate was better than hellsing because it was exactly like the comic with top notch animation. Berserk was basically the same with better 3D animation… this is just a bastardization of Vash the Stampede. And these evil villians is derivative of look of "what i can do" to a character. also you suck as youtuber your channel is like please please please watch my shit because my thoughts are on sitting on the fence pick a side and be passionate about push people away and push people to you.
