Hey since I'm also the second commenter, I'm gonna pick your brain. Where else could sci-fi/fantasy stories come from so they quit looking quite so similar to star wars / dune / star trek / these kind of classic scifi? Like the Bone graphic novels draw on european traditions more than USA traditions, could a story like this (pacifist with a superman origin on a violent hostile alien planet) develop from some other roots? I could think of a few ways to frame that but you're the You Tuber right now and I'm interested in your ideas too!

I like your thoughts abt driving towards ideals as a way to keep society/our morals/integrity together, re: pacifism and writing pacifist characters.

It came to mind that one could take that, the driving to perfect ideals, and compare it to gravity, like how gravity keeps us all on the planet's surface. Then the argument "why aim for an unattainable ideal? just get rid of it" becomes something like "why do we need gravity at all? we'll never survive at the planet's core, just get rid of it and we'll all live in comfortable zero-G". Our morals are a structure as fundamental to our survival as gravity is. We need it as an anchor so we can relate to other things that live on the Earth's surface. Falling into the dirt could be compared to failing to live up to our ideals – both of these give us information, whether that's about our body's limits or about something subconscious in our hearts. I'm sure there's more in that idea but I'm just using your comments section to blab now orz

This is a nice way for me to watch / read Trigun so I am eagerly anticipating your next episode 🙂 your insights are meaningful and your engagement w the show makes the video feel impactful. Also your look is classic and your editing style is fun and not obtrusive! The audio is a little unclear tbh so maybe some sound dampening would help you if you wanted to speak up / raise your mic gain. That's just an amateur recommendation though and the sound was still comprehensible. Ty for sharing!

Good first reaction! I think you'll enjoy the rest of the series, there's something in here for everyone to sink their teeth into. The animation is consistently lovely, as is the voicework and music, and the characters grow on you really fast. No spoilers, but you're correct in assuming there's way more nuance to Nai and Vash's conflict than meets the eye. They represent the extremes of their respective ideologies, but they make you see where both characters are coming from and how neither are both wholly right or wholly wrong. Looking forward to your thoughts on future episodes, you bring a very thoughtful viewpoint to your reaction and your theories just after watching the first episode are v intriguing. 👀

Glad you enjoy it! Looking forward to seeing your thoughts further.
Also, to answer your question at 10:13, I'm pretty sure he had it underneath his cloak. XD

I bit the bullet and binge watched this show after it’s final episode aired – though in truth, so many of the people I follow are into Trigun that I knew most of the story just through my Timeline on Twitter. Watching it, for me, was just to see all the blanks filled in so I could know what everyone was talking about without getting confused. And what I found was a show with a lot of heart that I had somehow just elected not to watch because I just…didn’t want to watch it at the time? I’m not sure. But it’s wheedled itself into my brain now and I’m so excited to see other people potentially fall in love with it too.

Vash is one of the few pacifist characters I can’t find myself getting annoyed at. There is a long line of ‘doesn’t want to fight until they get their cool moment’ characters that I tend to just…eh. Don’t hate them, but do get annoyed by them. But something about Vash just clicked with me better. Maybe it’s the fact that he doesn’t go from ‘AAAAAAA IM SCREWED’ to ‘NOW YOU’RE GONNA DIE’ when it comes to his big moment in this episode. He still gets to be cool while also retaining his earlier behaviors!

Please tell me you'll watch the dub lol Trigun is always seen as best in dub, unlike other anime. It's why people were going to boycott it entirely if the original VA, Johnny Yong Bosch (who also plays Nero from Devil May Cry, among other awesome characters), didn't get to reprise his role.

His legacy is so important that he was allowed to completely adlib in this if he wanted.
