If I had to give an opinion, I think recognizing who is good and who is bad is different from dealing out punishment. I think a person can be good, but they still deserve punishment and maybe that punishment doesn't need to be death. I think whatever situation you approach, you should go into it with the best of intentions. I think the majority of Thorfinn's philosophy is recognizing that even a person like himself was able to change truly. I think it boils down to trust. Edit: and yeah, feelings of hate are legitimate feelings and should recognized, but do you trust yourself to make the best decision in that state?

That being said, asking regular people to do this is pretty unreasonable 🤣 Just do your best, practice at it, and accept that you'll make mistakes. You don't need to be the literal embodiment of Jesus, that's just, cmon LOL

Vinland Saga better be on the list for Anime of the Year. Not sure if it'll win with more popular titles like Demon Slayer season 3, Attack on Titan (should finish this year), Spy x Family season 2, Oshi no Ko, Jujutsu Kaisen season 2, etc. Even if it doesn't win it does in my book so…yeah 😅

Two men, one shared utopia, two different paths to achieve it: PEACE.

Violence for peace (what an oxymoron) or peace through pacifism. Which is the superior path?

Here Thorfinn shows us that violence can be overcome by pacifism.
Regrettably, very few individuals are capable of repeating such an accomplishment. Solving conflicts without resorting to violence is significantly more challenging. It's undeniably the harder of the two paths but it's also the most noble. Only true warriors, such as Thorfinn – or Jesus, as you've mentioned – can take it.

To provide some balance to this, one could argue that pursuing universal peace is already a utopian concept in itself. If on top of that we seek to achieve it solely through pacifism, it adds a "utopia to the utopia". Canute's path has the merit of being much more pragmatic.

Both sides have good arguments, it's up to the viewers to choose

And for you, which path is the best ? Personally, I've made my choice. I know I'll never be as great as Thorfinn, this man is infinitely superior to me, but at least I can try to be like him. There are already many "Canutes" in the world, but very few "Thorfinns". Maybe we need more people like Thorfinn in the world?

Sorry for the long message but I believe it was after reading this chapter that I truly understood the meaning of Vinland Saga (the famous 'I have no enemies' line 🥲). It deeply moved me and changed me as a man, so I wanted to pay tribute to the profound depth of this manga. Thank you Makoto YUKIMURA and also to you for all the effort you put into understanding this story, I really enjoy hearing your thoughts!

Canute is using the classical "Problem of evil" argument in philosophy used by atheists to deny god's existence (in Canute's case he doesn't deny his existence but want to rebel against him) : "How can a good and merciful god allow such suffering in the world". The answer to that argument is what you said at 37:59 : we live to be tested and endure and grow, and only those who passed that test can attain paradise in heaven, not in earth.

Cola Dad 2023.06.05 - 10:49 pm

Speaking about right and worng and can you ''pay back'' for doing wrong- not really. It is, of course, a topic of discussion, yet there is no ''currency'' or any sort of karmic value that you could pay back for doing wrong. The same way how you cannot do a bunch of good things,w which will then make up for a bad thing, you cant do a bad thing and make up by doing a lot of good things, as there is no value scale that moves into the positives or the negatives, which you can impact. In a (seemingly) fair judgement system, there is only the factual concept of ''suffering is bad, harm causes suffering, you have caused harm, thus you have done bad and those are the facts. To not interfere with others within the society, not spread suffering, not become a target of suffering you will be locked up or, depending on the time period and law, be executed.'' There really is no ''making up for it'' in that regard. Of course there could be posed an argument that if he destroyed a house, he must dedicate his time a resources to build 2 in place, yet that would go back to the beginning of making up for bad by doing good. Doesn't really change what you did. Revenge is also a concept that has been a topic of discussion, and many stories talk about how revenge is never the answer. I would like to propose, that it might be. If one ha caused suffering to another, that other should be able to get ''pay back''. But again, what exactly is this payback, as there is no ''value exchange''? Which brings us to emotions and the fluctuations of the human mind. Repentance and forgiveness, then, seems to be the only viable pay back. A completely illogical concept, as if you forgive someone who has stolen from you or killed someone close to you, you still lose. They HAVE in fact taken value from your life, which will not come back. And you have accepted that loss and moved on. Repentance is the other side of the coin, as the culprit would have to seek shelter from his own festering regret, yet, in plenty of cases there is no regrets, besides getting caught. The human mind is capable of this, yet it rarely seems practical. Many religions and philosophies preach these abilities to forgive and repent, yet they are easily abused. But in general, I would like to summarize it in, that there is no pay back. You cannot and should not expect pay back from anything and anyone in life. The cruelty of it all is that no matter what you lose, no matter what is taken from you, nobody owes you a thing. You live and you build, and you lose without return. A harsh fact on the surface, yet, once you look deeper into it, you stand to gain a certain freedom many don't have. What that freedom is is for one to discover for themselves.

Productive suffering helps us grow. Not mistreatment. That can turn someone into a monster. Hence my social media posts.

Black Horizon 2023.06.05 - 11:21 pm

For me there are no good or bad people. As soon as you start judging people as bad people, you also open another door. You are one step away from labeling innocent people as evil just because they belong to the same group or nationality or whatever. There are only choices. And even about these decisions, in most cases, there are multiple truths. For example, if you hurt someone to protect someone, you can be good for one side and bad for the other side. I think people should stop thinking that a decision is the end of the road. Even if you make the wrong decision, you can still make the best of it. There has to be room for adjustment. (People will always make mistakes and learn and grow from them)

🤔I am not a Christian, but I do not understand canute point of view, although he is a Christian, but it seems that he did not understand God. The place where there is no pain, suffering, or death, God created it, and it is called heaven. And suffering and pain is what makes the earth different and special.
Freedom of choice and heaven cannot meet in one place, and what is the point of building a complete paradise on earth if you will only live for a few decades and then move after your death to another paradise?!
canute is just a hypocrite who doesn't even understand what heaven is. Whatever is built on evil is evil

Saying that God controls the waves is a reference to the universe having laws. The laws of physics are the order within the chaos in the universer and nature. And Cannute saying that humans connot find paradise under God's rule is also a reference to christianity and how human nature goes against God's teachings. Killing is a sin and you can try to follow that command by not killing a person, but God also says that hating someone is "killing" them in your heart and it is impossible to not hate anyone in your life. Basically, however much you try to build paradise by following God's commandments, you will always fail because it goes against human nature. I could go on and on about how that problem is solved in the Bible because I have read it 4 times but this isnt that kind of discussion. Anyway, dope episode.

This was by far the best episode by far the anime has done such an amazing job of elevating the manga to even higher highs than in the manga. Also ur cat is so cute with the little cone over his/her head!

Canute is Askeladd's biggest mistake. Askeladd hated Vikings & Canute wants to save them. He would be so disappointed. I think we would never have gotten this story if askeladd was alive because he would have killed Canute himself.

This is what i love about Vinland saga, it takes its major themes extremely seriously. Normally anime would just be all like we can end all wars and slavery with the power of friendship! But Vinland saga accepts the realities of the world and try’s to uncover the actual answer to these problems. It keeps me on the edge of my seat, i want to know what thorfinns answer to achieving lasting peace is. It’s an issue that doesnt have a clear cut answer and this anime treats it as such an issue even tho as a fictional story it could just cook up some fictional answer to the fictional problem instead it try’s to find the real answer.

Jose Vilchez 2023.06.06 - 5:01 am

Thorfinn thinks the best way to escape from war and viking traditions like slavery is running away to a land far away from them. Canute thinks that if he becomes the leader of the vikings he can change them little by little and end their traditions. But first, Canute needs to earn their respect, and that is through war. But Thorfinn just earned their respect by peaceful means. How can you act with mercy and be a pacifist without showing weakness? I think the answer to that question is what being a true warrior means. And however finds the answer will become a great leader.

I disagree that "no enemies" is a spiritual thing. Sure we have conflicts but that doesn't make them your enemy. Has nothing to do if someone is good or bad. Look at this thorfin scene, these vikings are worse than the rapists you mention.

Your views and opinions of this episode, it's amazing really , I feel noone dares to put so much extra effort into analysing the philosophies to such depth , making notes , explaining to the audience as well as naturally reacting , it's amazing really @Animaechan

I astral projected once, and it seemed like we really do all come here from one source, and that we all seem to live out lives on earth for each our own reasons. Life was almost equivalent to a addicting game. I am not saying that all of this is true or real, I am just saying that's what things seemed like while having that experience. The whole astral projection experience could very well just be a extremely real and convincing illusion, and nothing more then that. You guys make what you want out of this info.

Sahar 2023.06.06 - 9:01 am

This entire episode of Vinland Saga was just incredible. It's quite possibly the best episode I've seen of any anime in this entire spring season. Almost everything in this episode was great in my opinion.

– The Vikings even Drott (who later apologised) having respect for Thorfinn as a true warrior.

– Thorfinn finally saying the words his father Thors (and even us viewers) wanted him to say and believe in all this time.

– Olmar admiring Thorfinn's determination and strength to fight for Ketil's farm without any violence.

– Einar showing us the pain of an average person getting caught in the violence caused by ideals of people like Canute.

– Canute's revealing his true ideals on how he will make his version of "Paradise" on earth.

I fully agree on the paradise part I also thought alright Knut wants to make a place where as many people are happy but he can't control their happiness. You can at most provide a mean but at the end of the day people are still free and some will not choose how you'd like them to

Sentaku 2023.06.06 - 11:19 am

It would be a dangerous position to side with Canute here even if he does all this to abolish slavery. Look how the US invaded Iraq and Afghanistan in the name of "liberty democracy and women's rights" (in reality they invaded for oil and money but that's another topic) in a war that killed millions of people, and now these countries are in shambles and most of their people curse the americans, like Einar curses Canute here.

I agree with your take on having no enemies. It's really commendable for Thorfinn, from his Father, taking on such a mindset and way of life. I love it but I sadly find it so hopeless in the world we live in, & I feel that for him, holding up such a belief for the rest of his life would be near impossible, especially in that period of time. It's a very welcoming perspective, something I just wish everyone could understand. But that's why I am so drawn to this season, and our MC who will no doubt have this philosophy continously challenged from here on forward.

令和の柴犬 2023.06.06 - 3:51 pm

Torfin's ideas are very difficult to put into practice in the real world. But at the same time, it is a very important idea.

Canute was once a formidable foe at talk no jutsu and possibly as strong as naruto himself hence it made him king, seeing certain lines and how ppl already now but as expected stating him as true warrior and now thorfinn becomes a true protagonist, a warrior and will dethrone canute in talk no jutsu DATTEBAYO!
